Mourning Poem

Next Poem >>

I wrote this poem in March 2008 for my brother, Jon who committed suicide on the 6th March. Words cannot describe how I felt, or feel at the loss of my brother, but I wanted to write something to say goodbye to him at the funeral. At the age of 29, he was an amazing man and has left behind a wife, two children and a family who loved him dearly. I hope others may find this poem helpful in dealing with their own grief, I know my family certainly has.

My Brother, My Jon Jon

©  Diana Johannessen
My life feels empty without you here
My big brother, our Jon Jon
I don’t know how to go on without you here
You were always the strong one

I feel like I’m in a nightmare
This isn’t real, it can’t be
You can’t have left us, you can’t be gone
You have to stay here and take care of Shelly

How can life go on without you here?
I feel empty and my heart has broken
How can people laugh and joke
How can life be so unfair?

I know we always squabbled
You always wound me up
But I always loved you big brother
And I know, deep down you loved me too

You were an amazing daddy
A Wonderful husband
A strong brother
A devoted and dearly loved son

Please give my love to our big brother Jeffrey
And tell Granny I miss her too
I’ll be thinking of you always
And I know everyone else will too

We will miss you and grieve for you
But I know life will go on
But we’ll always remember you big brother
Life will never be the same again

You always loved to be the star of the show
So I know in my heart where you’ve gone
I know you’ll be the biggest and brightest star
And I’ll look there when I need you Jon Jon

I’ll look up to the stars at night
And try to find you there
Maybe someday I’ll wish upon a star again
And someday, I’ll join you there.
