Family is who we look to when we need help. We expect our parents to raise us, our grandparents to love us, and our brothers and sisters to always be there for us when the chips are down. They are our blood and we depend on that connection. When a family member doesn't live up to our expectations we feel abandoned. When a parent, grandparent or older brother or sister puts their needs in front of our own, we feel abandoned and alone. In such a case, we are likely to feel sad, alone and angery.

When a family member becomes addicted to drugs or alcohol, it affects the whole family unit. No one is sure what to do or how to react. This is a often a time to practice tough love. Family members must be firm with the addict in order not to be guilty of becoming enablers for his or her addiction. When the addict reaches rock bottom, he may realize that it is his responsibility to rebuild his life. Now it is up to him claw his way out of the hole he has dug. His friends and family can either help or hinder his efforts.

Adopted children are often referred to as chosen children. People with love to give and none to bestow it upon seek out a child to raise with love. Some parents choose to conceal their child's adoption thinking that it will only cause him pain and sense of non-belonging. Others choose to tell their chosen child thinking that he will find out anyway. When a child finds out that he is adopted, it may gave rise to feelings of confusion and alienation. The important thing to remember is that having parents that love you whether biological or chosen is a tremendous gift.

Aging is a natural process of life. It begins the moment we are born. Strangely enough, most of us live under the illusion that we and our loved ones will never become old. When old age arrives, we are often unprepared. The natural order becomes reversed. The young help to care for the old. Those who need to be taken care of for the first time have a hard time accepting that they need help. This condition is a product of our culture that does everything it can to conceal the loss of youth. Confronting this reality is the beginning of a healthy relationship to life, aging and death.

Anger is a human emotion that we all feel at one time or another. It is not the feeling that is problematic, rather it is our lack of knowledge of how to express anger which leads to so much sadness. In a family unit there is bound to be many times when one member is angry at another. How the individual chooses to express this feeling makes all the difference. When anger is repressed it tends to leak out into all aspects of the relationship. Learning how to communicate effectively when you feel angry with another is the key to happy relationships.

The anniversary is a time of reflection of the event that was experienced. It is healthy and natural to remember an event on the anniversary of the day it occurred. Moments of joy should be celebrated with joy. The same goes for sad occasions. These should not be ignored. Anniversaries of weddings and engagements are times to renew the love and affection that was felt during those times. They are an opportunity to bring the marriage to a higher level. Anniversaries are a function of the cyclical nature of the universe. The constellations become aligned in the way they were during that special occasion.

No human being is perfect. We all make mistakes. I only mention this because somehow it is so hard to admit that we are wrong. A famous line from the book "Love Story" by Eric Segal states that "Love means never having to say you're sorry". This may sound romantic but it is a really bad line to live by. Apologies are necessary in every relationship. Apologies are the building block of relationships. If a family has any hope of staying together, there will be frequent and sincere apologies.

Every member of the family has a unique role to play in the family unit. In every family these roles are different. A role that an aunt may play is that of helping parents getting along with their children. Much like grandparents, an aunt is not subjectively involved in what happens in the family. She is often able to see things in a more objective way. She also may be able to build relationships with sons and daughters and give them a place to get away from the family for a while. An aunt that is committed to nieces and nephews can play an invaluable part in their lives.

Poems about babies are some of the most popular poems that are written. There is nothing like interacting with a baby that ignites something magical in all of us. They stare at us with inquisitive eyes curious about everything that is happening in their world. We look into their eyes and we remember a time before we were sure we had seen everything meaningful in life. There are us in miniature. We look at their tiny features and their chubby little bodies and we can't help but smile. Interacting with a baby can be truly miraculous.

The celebration of a person's birthday is a life affirming event. When you celebrate your birthday you are making a statement that your life is significant and meaningful. You are saying, "my life is worth living and therefore I am celebrating that I am alive for another year. It is a time to get together with friends and family and celebrate the life that you are living. Birthdays may also be a time of melancholy reflection if we are not happy with our current station in life. For this reason it is good to have family and friends close to you to let you know how special they are.

What is a brother's place in a family? To a younger brother or sister, he may be a guide to help traverse the complicated path of growing up. To an older brother, a little brother may be seen as a tag along and pain in the neck. As much as siblings squabble when they are young, this is not a sign that they do not love each other. Most siblings would lay down their life for each other if someone threatened their sibling. As children grow up they usually find it easier to get along and relate to each other in rewarding ways.

Children are the ultimate gift to two people who love each other and the ultimate inconvenience to parents that don't. There is no bigger responsibility, and yet a relationship with a child can bear the greatest rewards. Children intuitively know when they are wanted and when they are not. The way that they raised from the cradle will affect the people they will become. There is a famous saying that children spell love T I M E. There may be many compelling reasons why you cannot be with your children but none of them can replace time. It is gone forever.

Dad's are often the most misunderstood in the family unit. As a rule, men have trouble displaying their emotions. This is product of our society that believes that it is not macho to be show emotions. Fathers may have been shamed into repressing their emotions and may pass this on to their children. On the other hand a father who can show his children that a real man is one who shows emotion is a great gift to his children. A father plays a huge role in his children's development. Hopefully, he will live up to the challenge of being the best Dad that he can be.

In many traditional cultures, fathers and mothers would pray for a boy who would be able to help in the field. In these cultures, the value of daughter was not understood. A father has a special relationship with his daughter as she will judge all men by his standard. A mother's task is to show her daughter the complex task of growing into a woman. We no longer live in an agricultural society and woman are free to accomplish intellectually and occupationally what she couldn't in the past. She might also one day play a role as a mother and wife. Raising a daughter is an infinite gift.

When someone in the family is depressed, the whole family is affected. Depression is a silent disease that sucks the energy and joy out of a person's life. If is very difficult for one has not experienced depression to understand its significance. It is important to get the individual into treatment and be sensitive and empathetic during their treatment. Depending of the type and degree of depression the individual may have to live with their illness their entire life. Depression must be accepted as an illness and not a lousy character trait.

It is an unfortunate fact that divorce has become commonplace in our society. The pain and anguish this is created in a divorce has a ripple effect on the family unit. Often family members are confused as how to act around the now divorced couple. Children are often used as pawns between their father and mother. Each one may try to gain the upper hand in the battle for their children's affection. Getting divorced may be necessary in cases when a relationship cannot be salvaged. However, the couple should keep in mind that the whole family unit will be affected by this change.

Every family has hopes and aspirations for themselves. Some may long to send their children to college if the parents have not had that opportunity. Others may aspire for a better life in another country. Sometimes there are conflicts between the dreams of the parents and the dreams of their children. Parents may have labored so that their children could have what they consider a better life only to have their children choose other options. This can heartbreaking for the parents who may think that they have labored in vain, and stressful for the children who have their own dream to live out.

When an individual begins to abuse drugs, the whole family is affected. Depending on the severity of the addiction, he may begin to steal or borrow money from the family, begin to act strange, and spend days living on the street. The only thing that is important is how he will get his next high. There may be conflicts in the family about how to treat this individual. Some may continue to support him while others adopt a tough love strategy. It is difficult to know what to do, and heartbreaking to see an individual become a slave to a substance.

Our family is the proverbial egg that we were hatched from. Everything about who we are, both our nature and nurturing comes from our family. Often in western society, we stray far from our family and may not talk to them for years at a time. We may feel that we have nothing in common with them. We may choose to run away from our roots because they are too painful to face. Ultimately however, our past holds the key to our future. If we do not face where we came from, we will have difficulty understanding our present and future.

Our fathers carry 50% of our genetic makeup. Our relationship to our father plays a huge part of who we will become. In many segments of our society, many people grow up without ever knowing their fathers. This is unfortunate because fathers should play as important a role in raising us as our mothers. A father is the model of a man for his daughter and she will choose a man who is like him A father is the model for his son as well. Fortunately, there is a trend for fathers to be more active in their children's lives.

Many men will agree that being a father is the most rewarding relationship that they have. Children begin by loving their fathers unconditionally. It is a clean slate. There is nothing the father has to do to earn his child's love. The difficult part is not losing it. As the child goes out into the world, he will see all kinds of men whom he will look to as models as well. It is crucial that his father stay active in his life and help him make intelligent decisions. A boy without a father will look elsewhere to fill his father's shoes.

Humor is the bedrock of healthy relationship. Humor it a tool we can use to let of steam when things get too heavy. If we cannot laugh at ourselves, life will become a tedious and stifling experience. Family life is difficult, there is no doubt about it. In order to stick with family through hard times it is important to be able to laugh at ourselves. Laughing helps get through arguments, sadness all kinds of hardships. Take the time to poke fun at yourselves and you will feel the burden on your shoulders lighten considerably.

Graduation day is a day to mark a tremendous accomplishment. You could not have come to this day without a lot of hard work. There may have been days when you felt that you could not continue, and yet you did. The moment when you are called up to the stage to receive your diploma, ,resplendent in your cap and gown, is a moment to savor. You can not lose what has now been given to you. Whether it is a high school, college, graduate, or doctoral diploma, that achievement will be yours forever. Now go on and take on the world!

Grandchildren are said to be all play and no work. "Send em' home when they get cranky", is how the saying goes. However, grandparent's should not miss out on the opportunity presented to them. They are not expected to discipline their grandchildren and this opens up an avenue for a different kind of relationship. Grandchildren often rely on their grandparents when thing are tense at home. Parents often rely on their parents to help raise their children in this confusing and complex world. Grandparents would do well not to squander the opportunity given to them.

One does not have to do anything to become a grandfather. It simply happens when your child has a child. It is up to you to decide how involved you will be in your grandchild's life. There is an inherent biological relationship but the emotional bonding between grandfather and grandchild comes only with effort. It happens when the grandchild sees that you are open to forming a relationship. It happens when you get off your easy chair and make the effort to see what matters to your grandchild.

A grandmother's job never ends. Many grandmothers in our society step in to raise children when their mother is unavailable. Even in the best of situations, having a grandmother to help with child raising and to provide a softer touch is often a welcome intrusion. The other side of the issue is that grandmothers have to realize when it is time to step back and keep their mouths shut. If there is a healthy father and mother, they are the ones with the final say in how to raise their children.

To be a grandparent is not an easy job. Your grandchildren are counting on you to love them unconditionally to a degree that their parents may not be able to.. They're counting on you to listen, really listen, without judging right or wrong. It is often assumed that you have no life of your own, and that you only exist to be called on when you are needed. This of course is not true. At the same time do not miss this opportunity that you have been given, a chance for a relationship with the next generation.

Growing up is hard to do. The challenges that a child must deal with throughout the life cycle are overwhelming. Children must deal with physical, emotional and psychological changes as they grow. There is no manual for growing up. In western society there are so many options given to children that they often feel confused and lost. We are not doing our children a favor if we do not provide guidance to them. Parents are there to help children navigate this confusing world. Let us not shirk in our duties.

Part of the reality of life is hardship. That is not a negative statement. It is simply a statement of fact. Every day brings new challenges. Living with the expectation that life will be difficult makes hard times easier to deal with. When a family encounters hard times they will need to join together and face the challenge as a team. They will need to be sensitive to the needs of individual family members each of whom will face unique difficulties. Life is not easy, but having a support system makes life that much easier.

"Home is the place when you go there, they have to take you in." In western society, most people move away from their family of origin. In spite of this fact, it is good to know that the home of your youth is still established.. It is nice to know that our parents are still living there, and that your bedroom is just as you left it. This provides a certain of stability as you struggle to build your own house and home. Eventually it is likely that your parents will sell the family home and begin their retirement years. You may feel that that the home that you have established has fully become your real home.

In today's world, where the roles of men and woman are changing so rapidly it may be difficult for a husband to figure out his role. A man can no longer expect to be the breadwinner, and come home to a set table with a five course dinner and his pipe prepared next to his easy chair. It has now become standard for a woman to have her own career and for her husband to share in childcare and housekeeping duties. At the same time he is still a husband to a woman who may expect her husband to be ideal example of masculinity and machismo. Balancing what is new and what might always stay the same is a difficult task for a husband.

Many times people say that they love their family but they don't like them. This is unfortunate because we are more likely to spend time with relatives than friends. In the world that we live in, It has become more rare to have relatives that are also friends. Often as children grow up, the division melts away and their love for each other increases. Many people are shy about sharing their love with their relatives. They may assume that they already know. The truth is that hearing those words, "I love you", make all the difference.

When you live in close proximity with other human beings there will be many times that you will offend each other. Families inevitably hurt each other from time to time. Saying "I'm sorry" are the two words that can repair your relationship. Without apologies the bad feelings are allowed to grow until eventually they grow into something so big and ugly that it is almost impossible to repair. It is difficult to humble ourselves and admit that that we may have made a mistake. However, when you think about the repercussions of not making a simple apology, you will realize that its worth the effort.

Research has shown that people live longer when they are surrounded by people they love. We are beings that thrive in community and it is not healthy to deny ourselves human contact. For people that live alone, even a pet has been shown to increase the life span for as much as five to seven years. Those of us that have blessed with family have been given a gift. They can join you in time of celebration and also in times of tragedy. Having a family to support you as you go through life is of monumental importance.

It is common misconception that love is developed with unconditional love and understanding. Well that is one kind of love. But how come there is often so much friction in our family relationships? People are always saying, "oh, my sister and I, we fought like cats and dogs". It is my contention that friction in relationships is an opportunity to realize our differences and accept that although we can never fully understand each other, nonetheless we accept and love each other.

A loving marriage is one of the greatest achievements of our times. Divorce is at an all time high, and the general belief is the marriage is a pain in the neck. The fact is that marriage is a pain in the neck. Relationships come with responsibility. But, marriage offers an opportunity to share the closeness of a committed relationship, to develop the inevitable friction which sharing your bathroom causes, into greater love and understanding. This opportunity is not offered anywhere else. This is the case for marriage.

Memories of our family and childhood are what shape our personality and who we are. Whether we like it or not, our personality is formed by our parents, brothers, sisters, and the environment that we grew up in. For some interacting with their family feels like more bother than it is worth. They cut off ties with their families and make up pseudo families made up of chosen friends. This is OK as long as we realize that our past continues to affect who we are. We can only grow as people when we choose to confront our past. Only then can we move forward in our lives.

Our lives are so busy and sometimes we live so far from our families. We miss the relationships with our families and often we do not even share important life events with them. We need to move back towards our families. If not in actual distance then at least we must move closer in our hearts. We live in a time where there are unprecedented communication possibilities. No one will ever love us unconditionally like our family can. We'd be fools not to take advantage of this opportunity.

Mother's are the most important individuals in our lives. We begin our lives completely dependent on them for our every need. Many believe that we search for aspects of the mother child relationship throughout our entire lives. Love it or hate it, she was your first love and will never be gone from your heart. You will always be in her heart also. Try telling her not to love you, try telling to her to forget you existed. It is impossible. Unless you are a mother yourself, you can never understand the intensity of this love.

The bond that a person develops with his mother can never be severed. You grew as an organism inside her for nine months. She carried you and sustained you, sharing her sustenance with you through your umbilical cord. When you are born the cord is severed. It is never severed in her heart. That bond lasts forever. As we grow up we become our own people and may come to forget that woman who nurtured and loved us. But remember this, she will never forget you and never stop loving you.

Did you ever wonder how a child ended up with a specific mother? According to Sufi mysticism, the soul of the child looks down at the world and sees every soul that resides in every woman. When he finds the one that will be able to help him fulfill his life's purpose, he makes his choice. The relationship between the mother and child is no accident. At times the child may reject his mother and wish he had a different one. Remember your soul made the choice for a reason. This woman can help you live your purpose.

Mother and daughter relationships are complex because the daughter looks to her mother as a role model of what a woman is. As she grows up and sees other woman who live their lives differently, she chooses between imitating her mother or other significant influences in her life. As an adolescent she may come to look down on her mother and think that other woman are much better. Of course she is not a fully grown woman so she does not understand the challenges and choices that her mother faces. It is only when she herself becomes a woman that she can fully appreciate her mother.

Respect for fathers and mothers is a common tenant of most cultures. With the advent of modern psychology, we now question this idea. If our problems are the result of the way we were raised, why should we respect them? When we respect our parents we are acknowledging that we do not know the challenges that our parents face. We recognize that our parents had to overcome their own childhood issues as well. Respecting our parents is the path to beginning to respect ourselves and ultimately respecting the cycle of life.

A man with a faithful wife who will give birth to and help him raise his children is truly lucky. A man wanders around as a half a person until he can convince a woman to be his better half. This is not an easy job for his wife. The gift of children is a present that a man can never understand. First a woman's body goes through the pain of pregnancy and childbirth then her body is left to heal. The bond that a mother builds with her child causes her worry throughout her life. The spiritual umbilical cord is never severed. To be a wife and mother are difficult, yet they have great rewards.

A great place for a family to relate to each other is in the beauty of nature. Petty arguments and grudges fall to the wayside in the face of nature's majesty. The earth is meant to be enjoyed by its inhabitants. That includes keeping it in the pristine condition in which it was discovered. Everyone has a part of the earth that they relate to the most. Whether it is a majestic mountain range, a roaring waterfall, a bouquet of flowers, or the calm of the woods, these are places to get to know oneself and build bonds with family.

What is the role of a nephew in an uncle or aunts life. There is nothing in particular that is uniquely nephew-like behavior. His relationship with his uncle or aunt is his and their choice. There are no expectations for the relationship. The thing that they have going between them is that they are related. However, the uncle and aunt are not as deeply invested in their nephew's future as his parents are. In their relationship he may have the freedom to express his true wishes and desires and by doing so come to understand himself.

Aunts and Uncles have an opportunity to relate to their niece in a way that her parents may not be able too. Since she is not in their care, they do not feel the weighty responsibility of knowing that they are responsible for her upbringing. This leads to a different kind of relationship in which they can relate to their niece by appreciating her unique talents and gifts that make her so special. They can spend time spoiling her and treating her like the princess she is.

Parents are the unsung heroes of every person that has ever done anything great. Think about the people that you most admire in your life. Do you attribute any of their greatness to the people that raised them? Often, we do not even think about the fact that there were most likely two people who were most influential in making a person who they are. Of course I am referring to his or her parents. If a person is great, remember that greatness is not achieved in a vacuum. There were people who sowed the seeds of greatness.

Relationships between parents and children are complex. When we are young we take for granted everything that is done for us. We don't appreciate what our parents do, rather we expect it. When we reach adolescence, not only do we not appreciate our parents' role, rather we are in open rebellion at them and everything that they stand for. It is only as adults when we realize the extent of the complex choices that our parents made do we begin to feel gratitude to our parents.

Pregnancy is the privilege of experiencing God's miracles on earth. "In my flesh I see the mark of God". Nowhere is this more apparent than in the experience of a pregnancy. Science has made it possible to witness the baby's growth on a sonogram. Once you see that, there's no turning back. Watching and feeling this little miracle grow inside you, knowing that one day you will hold this child in your hands is one of the greatest gifts that can be experienced.

Prison is the punishment that keeps on taking. Long after the individual has regretted his or her sin and wishes to go back to living a productive life, he must stay in prison wasting his precious years on this earth. Almost anything you take from a man can be given back except time. He can never reclaim the time that was stolen from him. He can never experience his children growing up for they are already grown. He can never experience those precious moments with his wife for most likely she has moved on. Of all the crimes that man commits to go to prison, in most cases our decision to keep there is worse.

To be part of a family is to be in a relationship. There is an opportunity for a closeness and trust that cannot occur outside family. With this possibility for closeness is the possibility of hatred and estrangement. It is not easy to maintain positive relationships with those that we are naturally closest to. There are tensions that exist between family members that are not present in other relationships. Being in close proximity means that you know of persons great attributes as well as their faults. Maintaining family relationships are a tremendous challenge.

Retirement is something that people look forward to all of their lives. It is a lucky few however, that truly get to enjoy their golden years. Factors like health concerns, death of a spouse, and monetary issues are all things that can prevent people from taking full advantage of their retirement years. My motto is enjoy life while you can because you never know what is going to happen later. Those that are lucky enough to really enjoy their "golden years" are truly blessed.

A family reunion is a time of great joy and excitement. In the world that we live in, families are often scattered around the globe. Loved ones may not see or talk to one another for years, even though there is but a plane ride separating them. A family reunion is a time to remember that although you may feel close to your neighbors and friends, there is nothing quite like family. These are the ones who are closest to you in blood. You share the same history and ancestors who cared for you. When you really need help, family members are the ones who are most likely to come through.

How does a couple continue to kindle the spark of romance after years of marriage? Couples have always struggled with this. What is the definition of romance? Any act that helps a couple feel that they are more than roommates and that reminds them of the special feelings that they hold for each other deep inside is a romantic gesture. Feelings of love are often hiding just below the surface. All it takes to bring these thoughts out is some thought about what will make your partner feel loved and sexy.

Just as the earth goes through seasons, so does a family in the course of time endure seasons. Marriage, falling in love, and the birth of a children are times of renewal like Spring. Long pleasant periods of calm that some families are blessed to have are like the feeling of an endless Summer. As we and our children grow older, our leaves start to change. We start to experience Autumn. This may seem like dying but it is really only signs of a new phase of life. The times of crises and hardship are times for the family to stay close together, help each other out and endure what are sometimes the frigid winds of change. This period is akin to Winter. Life is full of seasons and changes which are best experienced with the support of friends and family.

The shorter the poem, the more difficult it is to write. Every word must be exactly what you intend to say. There is no time for long winded explanations. Often it may take longer to write a short poem. You are more likely to write it and revise it many times before you feel that each word is perfect and perfectly placed. This may be analogous to a small family. There are not many people so each one much show up. Each one must do their part to create a loving family unit. Every family member must play their role to perfection.

Brothers and sisters love each other. When it comes to defending a sibling, have no doubt that brothers and sisters will defend each other to the death. The irony is that sometimes they cannot say a civil word to one another. They love each other but they just can't stand each other. Brothers and sisters live so close together that they cannot help but compare themselves to each other. Invariably, one will have talent in an area where the other doesn't. This may feel threatening. The only way to combat sibling rivalry is to nurture a secure sense of self so that no one else can be seen as a threat to an individual's place in the family unit.

Having a sister in your life can either be a wonderful or terrible experience, depending on your relationship. If you have an older sister and you are a girl, she can often show you how to navigate the way through some of the more difficult areas of growing up. This is also true is you are a boy. Your older sister can help explain to you how to interact with the opposite sex. Younger sisters are a joy as well. They often worship their older siblings and it can be a nice experience to be admired. Relationships with sisters, like any relationship depend on the people involved.

The relationship of a son towards both his parents is very complex. A son will likely feel a close bond with his mother, yet see his father as an adversary and competitor. When a son sees how his father interacts with his mother he will either attempt to model his father's behavior or reject his father's example of relationships with woman. From the parents' point of view, having a son can be one of the greatest joys they will ever experience but also one of the greatest challenges. Balancing the need to offer freedom to your son while placing appropriate boundaries may be an area of contention.

There is nothing more painful than fighting between family members. Whether between parents who are married or divorced, or between siblings, there is nothing more bitter than watching people who once loved each other say painful things to one another. Family member know each other better than anyone. They know each others vulnerabilities and can hurt each other in the most private and intimate places. So before you say something to a family member, no matter how much you think that they deserve it, remember, the pain of the memory of this encounter will last much longer than the satisfaction of a good one liner.

The ability to feel sympathy for each other is one of the most beautiful traits that we possess as humans. The human condition is one of fundamental aloneness. When we reach out and share our sympathies with another human being in pain, we are offering a great kindness to the individual in pain. He knows that he is fundamentally alone but at least he knows that others care and are trying to understand.

Much has been written about the period of adolescence. This is a time when an child begins to question the value systems of his family and society and strives to form his own opinions. It is a time of great confusion and upheaval because he has thrown away the old values and has not completely formed the new ones. Parents often become shaken when they see their teenage son on daughter begin to question the values that he or she grew up with. Parents should not worry. In fact they can feel relieved that their child is beginning to become his or her own person.

Saying thank you can be a difficult thing to do. Doing so means admitting that you are in another's debt. I am admitting that another individual did something for me. I am not all powerful, I need the help of others to survive. The reality is that the human race is interdependent. We cannot live life alone. We are constantly relying on each other for all kinds of resources, both physical and emotional. When I say thank you I am acknowledging that I have received something from another human being.

In western society many people feel that traditions are no longer needed. They say that they may have been necessary when we lived in small tribal communities and needed traditions to help form a cohesive group. The irony is that individuals in our society are likely to feel more isolated than ever before. Surrounded in a city with six million people may live the loneliest man in the world. With all of our technology to connect us, we see less human contact than ever before. Traditions that bring us together are needed more than ever.

The closeness that twins experience is unique. Growing up in the same family, and the same age, they are in a unique position to share perspectives on life. On the other hand, many twins experience a need for space. They may find their close relationship to be stifling. Depending on their personalities they may be the best of friends or worst of enemies.
