Aunt Poem
A woman shares memories of a very special place, made special by her great-aunt.
A Very Special Person In A Very Special Place
©
Frances Franz
From the time when I was very small,
I visited this very special place as I recall.
In Fredericksburg, Texas, it went back in time,
A two-room log home with beauty sublime.
I'd always find treasures during my visits, be it arrowheads, featherbeds, wood-burning stoves, or whatever I could find in the closet.
There was no running water coming into the house,
Not even enough for a mouse.
To the well we would go to fetch a pail,
And back to the kitchen without fail.
No toilet either--thought that was neat,
We'd go to the outhouse to find a seat!
No running water, but there was a creek,
Live Oak its name.
Although I don't believe it brought much fame.
Tiny windows on the creek-side,
I wondered why.
Indians I was told, may try to get in; but friendly so they never even tried.
The smell of homemade bread on a wood stove or sausages and cooked cheese all bring back memories of family times around the huge kitchen table,
And Great-Aunt Tillie fixing whatever small meal she was able.
Great Aunt Tillie, you see, is the very special lady in a very special place.
I can see her now with her loving, beautiful face.
She never wanted much in her time on God's earth; she was a simple soul.
The love of God, a good example we should all follow as our lives unfold.
They're gone now, this very special person and very special place, never again will I find,
So now when I visit,
I must visit in my heart and also in my mind.
