A page has been turned on American history with the election of Barack Obama, and perhaps a new chapter opened as well. According to reports from overseas, this has been a shot heard 'round the world, as other nations are cheering our election of an African American president. With this move, we have regained international respect, and perhaps gained some self-respect here at home.

Change

No matter where we stand on party lines,
no matter what the price we have to pay,
we trade the past to find a newer way,
we see our future writ in new designs,
our blessed fruit is blooming on new vines,
Obama is our leader from today,
we learn to strive together come what may,
our cup of challenge tastes like finest wines.

Yes, black and white and yellow, red and brown,
minorities all faced by common fate,
and - yes we can - we hear it - young and old,
for we will make it happen soon or late,
and always lift our eyes and not look down
in spite of those who say we are too bold.

Our kids no longer damned for being black,
a guilt we always shared in self-attack.
America is gaining new respect,
our bigotry reduced by this connect,
we shout with pride - no chance of turning back.
