Animals, when placed in captivity are more often than not separated from their siblings and their young. Why would their hearts not be broken? Ours would be.

Elephants have the saddest faces-
I know, I saw one cry today.
She looked at me and I looked back-
But soon I had to turn away.
Elephants say the saddest things-
One almost broke my heart today.
She closed her eyes and uttered this:
"My God...they took my son away."
