Daughter Poem

I Thank God Daily For This Gift

I have been married for 18 years and I was told that I could never have children, My faith in God gave me assurance that I would be a mother. My daughter will soon be 11 years old and this is how I see her. She is the greatest happiness in my life and I thank God daily for this gift that he chose me for and it is to be her mother.

My Reflection

Sometimes I look in the rearview mirror or out the corner of my eye and see a reflection of me.
Not the way your hair has that blonde shine in it or the way you smile.
Not the dimples in your cheeks or even the way you smirk just a little when you're being naughty.
But I see my hope for you when I hear you say, I want to be a doctor when I grow up.
When I hear you say I want a sister just the way I did my mom when I was little.
I see that reflection when I see you care about someone a little less fortunate than you or even when their body or mind is impaired.
Yea that is when I see my reflection in you.
I see that reflection when I hear you sing to your friends that new song you learned.
It talks of his amazing grace and how he saved a wretch like you.
I see that reflection when you did not want to hurt someone when they hurt you.
Instead you decide to pray for them.
I see that reflection when you hold a dog or a kitten close and ask God to heal it when it is sick.
I see that reflection in you when I hear you say to your friends, "Don't treat your mama like that."
I see that reflection when I see you treat an adult like they are your leader with respect and honor.
I see that reflection when I see you with your grandmother and hang on her every word, because you love her so much.
And with your Daddy when you do all you can do to get his attention.
I see that reflection when you watch me put on my makeup, so you can do it just as I do.
The way I watched my own mama.
Yea I see that reflection, or maybe it isn't a reflection at all.
Maybe it is the things that I have instilled in you.
But I will continue to look in that rearview mirror or out the corner of my eye and catch a glimpse.
A GLIMPSE of the wonderful you that you are.
