Next Poem >>

Ted L Glines has been writing since 1965, mostly rhyming verse and song lyrics, along with some free verse and prose. In the beginning years, most of his works were activist oriented and connected to the "freedom of speech" movement, with many poems published in college literary magazines and the "underground" free press (Village Voice, etc.). Having somewhat mellowed out in later years, Ted's works now lean more toward entertainment and humor. Major influences have been Edgar Allan Poe, Jack London, Patty Burkeen, Silvia Plath, Gilbert O'Sullivan, Wendy Baral Cooper, Shakespeare, H. P. Lovecraft, and Paul Simon. Currently residing in rural east Texas after escaping the battleground of southern California. Peace is good.

Cop's Song

What I am, what I was, what I will be,
what will the next bloody thrill be?
A robber, a cop, a saint, or a whore,
what will I find when I open your door?
Where is the love that's never been,
the emptiness haunts me again and again.
Where is the line between right and wrong,
where is the end of the endless song?

Song?

Who will I meet who will sing me a song,
just a whispering song where I belong,
like a lullaby to sing me to rest,
where I can feel good in a warm little nest.
Here comes the call, they're calling my name,
another chance for death or fame,
so loosen the gun and forget about fright
and the siren will sing my song tonight.

Read this and I really don't know what to say but wow. I've been a police officer for almost 12 years now and the words hit how my heart feels sometimes. I've been through a lot of personal tough times and work related tough times and I can find many emotions that I can relate to within this poem. Both good and trying. Very well done. Will save this as my favorite…
