Poems With Couplets

Published: July 2017

Collection of poems written with stanzas that have only two lines. 2 line stanzas are called Couplets. Couplets usually rhyme, but they do not have to. A stanza in poetry is a group of lines usually separated by a blank line. Stanzas of 2 lines are called Couplets from the Old French word cople meaning two.

Although I am only 26 years of age, I feel as if (in reference to The Rolling Stones' great song) time is no longer on our side. My family gets smaller as the years pass. I no longer have any grandparents, and the rest of the family rarely talks or gets along. I'm sure each reader thinks about how they really wish they appreciated their youth more, but we can't stop time; we can only cherish it.

For never giving up on me when your wits had reached its end,
for always being proud of me, for being my best friend.

And so I come to realize, the only way to say,
the only thank you that's enough is clear in just one way.

Look at me before you see what I've become.
Do you see yourself in me, the job that you have done?

All your hopes and all your dreams, the strength that no one sees,
a transfer over many years, your best was to pass me.

I had to wake up and realize

But I can truly tell her, "You're the sweetest dream I ever had,"

To be happy again, I'll have to relive the past.

Having been with my partner for 22 years and having 3 children to him, I get hurt when I know he's being thinking about an ex he had before me (he saw her for 6 months; she was married and aborted his baby). Unfortunately, whenever my partner feels low, he starts to go over everything bad from his past and struggles to see what he has in his life now: a nice house, car, loving and loyal partner, and three amazing kids.

This is just a poem I wrote describing how I feel. He has been gone a year and a half now, and even though I was by his side when he died, I still cannot even for a minute believe he is really gone. Love and miss you, Dad. You are my Angel.

from all the talks we had.

I hate that God took you so soon,
when I still needed you here.

But I love the thought of you at peace,
no more pain and no more fear.

I hate not knowing for sure
what happens when you die.

But I really love to believe
there is a heaven past the sky.

The thing I love to hate the most
is when people think I'm so strong.

But it actually only seems that way because
I can't accept the fact that you really are gone!

don't think like that; thoughts like that should be ignored.

If you're dangling off the edge of a cliff, hold that rope.
Call for help because someone will pull you back up. There's always hope.

When you've lost your way in the darkness of night,
Just keep walking because the sun will rise and guide you with its light.

You go every which way in a dark cave, and it seems like an impossible puzzle.

I wrote this emotional poem when I started thinking about the things regarding my sister Mencia Gawanas that I took for granted. I thought that she'd always be around, so there were all these things that I thought I would always have. I thought she'd always text me, or smile at me, or call me. I thought I would have her in my life forever. Alas, God had a different plan for us. I just wish I knew that I would have her for so little a time, for she was only 20.

There is a competition in my son's school for poetry reciting. The topic is "Save Our Mother Earth." I did not have any poem, and my internet was not working, so I started writing this poem, and the result is what you are reading.

Faith and courage is what will get you through this life.
