  1. The Year

    Famous Poem

In this famous New Year’s poem by Ella Wheeler Wilcox, she shares the reality of each new year. Time continues to move forward—years come and they go. Every new year is marked by great expectations, but the reality is that each year is filled with both joyous and sorrowful moments. This poem is made up of rhyming couplets (two-line stanzas).

  2. A Naughty Little Comet

    Famous Poem

This classic, fun, and rhythmic poem by Ella Wheeler Wilcox (1850-1919) is a cautionary tale about a mother-daughter struggle that will be familiar to many parents of teenagers. The lesson taught is the virtues of a cautious and modest approach to life. The bold and fun loving daughter doesn't listen to the scolding of her wise mother and instead runs wild, reveling in her youth and beauty. In the end the mother's fears come true.

    • By Joe Massocco
    • Published by Family Friend Poems February 2015 with permission of the Author.

Although I am only 26 years of age, I feel as if (in reference to The Rolling Stones' great song) time is no longer on our side. My family gets smaller as the years pass. I no longer have any grandparents, and the rest of the family rarely talks or gets along. I'm sure each reader thinks about how they really wish they appreciated their youth more, but we can't stop time; we can only cherish it.

I have struggled with anxiety for many years. It is such an awful thing, and for people who don't have any idea what it is like, it is hard for them to understand. For any of you who struggle with this, you are not alone. I hope that you will somehow learn to overcome it. Unfortunately, I have not, but I will never give up hope.

  17. Why Play At Being Real?

I was inspired to write this poem after being stood up for the 3rd time by a guy who had led me to believe he was completely into me. Phone conversations in the middle of the night that would last for hours, dates that were absolutely awesome on every level, unbelievable rapport and compatibility, physical attraction... just a lot in common... like twin flames. But then he started making dates but never showed or even called, sometimes until a week or two later. Then he just stopped... no closure.

My dad was diagnosed with prostate cancer in February of 2007, and for 3 years he tried to fight this killer, but the cancer won. I miss him every day, and I write to help me through my pain. This is just a poem I wrote describing how I feel. He has been gone a year and a half now, and even though I was by his side when he died, I still cannot even for a minute believe he is really gone. I wrote this emotional poem when I started thinking about the things regarding my sister Mencia Gawanas that I took for granted. I thought I would have her in my life forever. Alas, God had a different plan for us. I just wish I knew that I would have her for so little a time, for she was only 20.

I wrote this poem from the point of view of a someone who is speaking to their friend, and talking about how throughout their lives they have always managed to stay together. That their friendship was strong enough to make it through the good, the bad, and all the in-between moments they have gone through in their lives, and even though their lives are close to ending, they were, are, and will always be best friends.
