Memorial Day Poem

Poem About Difficulty Returning Home After War

When I wrote this poem I was watching The Pacific, which made me realize how men suffered in Vietnam and how it affected their lives. How when the war was over they did not know what to do with themselves. It was almost as if they were sad and did not want to leave but also happy that they were home. It was like they were lost souls trying to find their way back into some sort of normality.

Everyone Calls Me A Hero

Published by Family Friend Poems June 2014

What do I hear?
What do I see?
Men crying, begging.
Bodies? Thousands.

What a man can do,
I'd never dream of it,
I do it in reality.
My gun is my brain

Screams and cries,
I hear them, but do not ponder.
No guilt runs through my veins,
Does it?

V-Day? No!
My life will be nothing,
War has seduced me.
Normal life? No please!

I'm the one begging now,
Is anyone listening? No.
I didn't give my victims the time of day,
So would anyone me?

My life is just this now.
Just another worn soldier,
Everyone calls me a hero,
... I call myself a murderer.

I don't know anyone who has been deployed and has guilt, thinking they are a murder. Most are just doing what they need to know order to survive. There is a lot of guilt and trauma that we, as civilians will never understand. You can listen, but until you are there, as my husband tells me, you can't know why so many soldiers come back mentally unwell by civilian standards.
