Cancer Poem

On August 5 2008, I was diagnosed with breast cancer after my cat Ceilidh had jumped up on my chest a few weeks before.
Her back paw stood on my left breast and when I went to move her off and then rubbed the area where she stood, it was then I felt the lump. I sat down and wrote out my feelings on dealing with this cancer in a poem. My first poem. I had my mastectomy in Sept-3-08 and now going through chemo treatments. My cat Ceilidh was a wild stray cat when I took her to live with me 11 years ago. I saved her life and she saved mine.

River Of Tears

Published: November 2008

THE RIVER OF TEARS
Is where many people
Have cried because of
Their unknown fears.

THE RIVER OF TEARS
Took many years to fill up
To understand not everything
Is being offered by hand.

THE RIVER OF TEARS
Will always be around
Until we learn to
stand firm on our own ground.

If we allow ourselves to love
Experience hurt, to trust
With all our hearts but know
In order to trust, we should
Take what we must.

To be wise, strong, loving,
And to be tall
To see we can't have it all.

THE RIVER OF TEARS
Has been building up
From so much sorrow.
But on the other side
Of that river
Is a brighter tomorrow.

I myself had shed many drops of water
Into that river of tears.
To see my own reflection and know
I can turn my life in a new direction.

If I can allow myself to see there
Will be bad days and good days that will
Be so much better, then with this bit of knowledge
I can end my letter.
