Poems About a Lost Love

The loss of a lover, whether because they have passed on or for any other reason is a heartbreaking experience. Some never fully recover. There might always be a small place in your heart that holds the pain of this experience. This is natural and fine. Even when you find another person to love, it is OK to hold a place for the lover that has passed. You shared something profound together. The previous relationship that you had is not like your new relationship. Every relationship is unique and should be allowed a place in your heart.

51 Poems on Love That's Been Lost

  1. 1. Daydream

The man in the poem is daydreaming about his youth and a love from long ago. He wonders if she still thinks about him. He longs for his youth while pondering his mortality.

Reminiscing About A Love From Long Ago

Where did all the flowers go?
    Falling leaves in colors show
    Spring is but a memory.
    Distant dreams come over me.

Where do all the rivers flow?
    Autumn leaves in colors know.
    Yesterday is just a dream.
    Can you hear it whispering?

    I can feel the afterglow
Of a time so long ago
When the sun could only shine
Beyond the shadows of my mind.

    Yesterday is just a dream.
    Can you hear it whispering?
    Love is but a memory.
    Distant dreams come over me.

  3. 2. My Storm

This poem is about accepting a fate that was foreseen but all too tragic anyway.

A Relationship That Was Never Meant To Be

So awkward in the morning, just a little unsure
A little off your game, but it all felt so pure
We knew from the beginning that this was going to hurt
From floating in the clouds, to face down in the dirt
But we jumped anyway; love chased away the fear
Made all the noise that we heard disappear
The storm moved in behind our backs, we never stood a chance
The devastation buried us, a beautiful romance

  5. 3. A Love Lost

I'm sure that everyone at one time of another has blown the opportunity to have a lasting romance. Unfortunately, you can never go back and change the mistakes that were made. This poem is about a guy who realized the mistakes that were made and he's paying for them now.

Lessons Learned About Protecting A Relationship

I'm sure it won't be easy repairing my poor heart.
I've gone about it knowing right from the very start.
I simply can't complete it now and maybe never will.
It's got a part still missing that only she could fill.

When she gave her love to me, all I did was doubt her,
Unaware how life would be living without her.
Now she's gone, and I'm alone to live my life my way.
Sadly, everything I do has seen a better day.

Live and learn the prophets say
Learn to love the only way.
If you do, then you just may
    Live to love another day.

As time went on, I always thought that she'd remain enchanted.
But sadly now, I realize I took her love for granted.
I wish I could go back in time and change things one by one.
But now I know the pain I caused could never be undone.

True love is a special gift that has to be returned.
A lesson that the lonely have seldom ever learned.
But life goes on and so does love. Alone they're incomplete.
Take the time to guide them and protect them when they meet.

Live and learn the prophets say
Learn to love the only way.
If you do, then you just may
    Live to love another day.

  6. 4. If Only

I had a very special guy in my life that I said goodbye to but felt there were things left unsaid that should have been said at the time of the breakup. I know that I broke this wonderful guy's heart, and this poem was written to let him know that there were so many things I wish I had told him but were left unsaid.

Unspoken Words That Should Have Been Said To An Ex

If only I could turn back time and relive my days with you,
I'd hold on tight with all my might when I found my way to you.
If only you knew how I felt lost when I knew what I left behind,
you'd understand why I felt the need to turn back the hands of time.

If only you knew that letting you go was my single greatest regret.
And if only you knew that I was hurting too and it's a feeling I can't forget.
If only you knew I thought of you as the only one to hold and kiss,
and you need to know before I go, you're someone I truly miss.

If only you knew that when I met you, you brought color to my day.
And you need to know before I go, before you, I only saw gray.
If only you knew when I needed you, you were always there to listen.
And if only you knew that when you left, a part of me went missing.

If only you knew, time spent with you was the best part of my day.
And if only you knew because of you, I am the person I am today.
If only you knew when I was with you, I had no worries or cares.
And you need to know after I let you go, I kept you in my prayers.

You need to know before I go you didn't do anything wrong,
and you need to know before I go your love only made me strong.
If only you knew that when I was with you, I never felt sad or alone,
and if only you knew that my love for you was the best I've ever known.

If only you knew when I was with you, you never let me down.
and if only you knew how my love grew every day you came around.
I need you to know before I go that my love wasn't make believe,
nor was it a dream, or infatuation, or even a fantasy.

You need to know before I go, you were the best time of my life.
And you need to know instead of letting you go, I wanted to be your wife.
If only you knew when I was with you, we came so close to forever.
And if only you knew time spent with you is something I'll always treasure.

If only you knew that I wanted to move up time to see the future
and see if we had found each other and if our love was truer.
You need to know that I loved you so, and you gave me so much pleasure,
and you need to know I don't want to let go but stay in this moment forever.
    If only....

  7. 5. Lost Love

This poem is about my first great love. We were young teenagers so much in love and hoping for a future. Being so young, we had a lot of growing up to do, and the relationship went into a long-distance relationship when he moved back to his home state after finishing school. He was so special, and our 2 1/2 years together was so special. We eventually moved on, and so the love story ended, but he will always be my first great love, but he is also my long-lost love.

    Remembering My First Love

Do you remember me like I remember you
and wonder how our lives might be if we had said “I do”?
If I could hear those three little words that made my life complete,
my heart would know what my ears had heard and probably skip a beat.

Ours was a love story to remember
from the cold dark winters to warm summer weather.
Because of you, memories still linger
of the promise ring you placed on my finger.

You needed to find your place in this world,
even if it meant with some other girl.
I knew I had to let you go
even though I loved you so.

    Remember our last sad goodbye?
Our hearts were broken. Tears burned our eyes...
So the hardest thing I’ve ever done was to accept we had to part.
But I hope you will remember you’ll always have my heart.

And so we kissed and we embraced,
and then I memorized your face.
You walked away to catch your flight
but not before we held on tight.

We both moved on and found new lovers.
I married one. You live with another.
Life is not always what is meant to be,
but I will hope, and dream, and always believe.

Imagining you lying next to me
is only a dream, a fantasy.
And only God knows how I’d feel
if all of my dreams could turn out real.

    You are always with me.
    You live inside my heart.
And there you will always be
    and never would we part.

    I will always love you
    and I will always care.
    You changed my life forever.
You’re my one true love affair.

You always knew how to ignite the fire.
You’ll always be my one desire.
It is always you I’m thinking of.
You'll always be my long-lost love.

  8. 6. 700 Miles From My Heart

    • By Sirenity K. Ball
    •  Published by Family Friend Poems September 2018

Distance is only a number, but love is infinite. Sadness is only a moment, but love is a lifetime. I tell myself that a lot. I met a guy, and we had great chemistry. We understood each other and got along instantly, but I had to go away, and my heart shattered quickly. He hugged me goodbye and he was burned into my memory.

    Don't Forget Me

In my dreams you're right by me
Sleeping through the night beside me,
And when I wake up and it's a dream,
I don't have any tears left to comfort me.

    I've locked my heart away
And I've dreamed about the day
    I'm carelessly walking someplace
And run into someone just to see your face.

    But my heart is broken.
    It's been effortlessly stolen,
And I hope you will forever be holding it,
Fixing the crooked pieces that were bent.

Because the last time I hugged you,
    You held me tight,
    Loved me as I cried,
And said it would be all right.

Because time is just a number
    And sorrow isn't forever,
And I promise I will always remember
All the good times we have had together.

Because I love you more than words can say
As all my old infatuations fade away.
I wish I could look into the future and see our fate.
Maybe then I could calm my heart rate.

And I think of you every day.
There isn't a day that I don't picture your face.
I cry every time it rains
Because I picture our first date.

And I miss the way you laugh
Because it brings me joy whenever I'm sad,
And if I'm with you, life has dealt me a good hand
Because only with you do I realize what I have.

I have a guy who makes me laugh
Who truly cares if I'm sad,
Who makes me smile when I'm mad,
And listens to me when I rant.

    So between now and then,
Please don't forget who I am
    Because it has been said
You can forgive but never forget.

So please don't forget my face
Or how when I'm nervous I pace.
And think of me whenever it rains
So that when we meet again we will be in the same place.

We will be in love without a care
Because what we had is rare.
You're exactly perfect down to every hair.
Even if there was an error, I would never care.

    I love you!

  9. 7. Tonight I Can Write The Saddest Lines

This poem was published in 1924, just as Pablo Neruda entered his 20s. In this poem, the speaker is dealing with the end of a relationship and longing for the woman to be back in his arms. The repetition of, “Tonight I can write the saddest lines,” brings the reader’s attention to that theme throughout this sad love poem. Pablo Neruda used alliteration throughout this poem with many words beginning with “s” (saddest, shattered, stars, sky, soul, etc.).

Tonight I can write the saddest lines.

Write, for example, 'The night is shattered
and the blue stars shiver in the distance.'

The night wind revolves in the sky and sings.

Tonight I can write the saddest lines.
I loved her, and sometimes she loved me too.

Through nights like this one I held her in my arms
I kissed her again and again under the endless sky.

She loved me sometimes, and I loved her too.
How could one not have loved her great still eyes.

Tonight I can write the saddest lines.
To think that I do not have her. To feel that I have lost her.

To hear the immense night, still more immense without her.
And the verse falls to the soul like dew to the pasture.

What does it matter that my love could not keep her.
The night is shattered and she is not with me.

This is all. In the distance someone is singing. In the distance.
My soul is not satisfied that it has lost her.

My sight searches for her as though to go to her.
My heart looks for her, and she is not with me.

The same night whitening the same trees.
We, of that time, are no longer the same.

I no longer love her, that's certain, but how I loved her.
My voice tried to find the wind to touch her hearing.

Another's. She will be another's. Like my kisses before.
Her voice. Her bright body. Her infinite eyes.

I no longer love her, that's certain, but maybe I love her.
Love is so short, forgetting is so long.

Because through nights like this one I held her in my arms
my soul is not satisfied that it has lost her.

Though this be the last pain that she makes me suffer
and these the last verses that I write for her.

  10. 8. A Simple Smile

Losing a best friend and knowing they are your true love.

    Saying Goodbye Too Soon

A great big laugh, a simple smile.
You came into my life to only stay awhile.

At first glace, I knew it was meant,
But the time with you, I don't know where it went.

I think about you almost every day.
Try to ask myself how I let you get away.

You had to leave what was meant to be,
Made me see what I couldn't see.

I've grown with you, a better man today.
Once lost, you've helped me find my way.

It was what it was that I cannot change.
What a mess I have to try to rearrange.

This place in life that we are at now.
Would have never thought that it would be allowed.

True love was something always on my mind.
    Always there but never designed.

To see you again and have it like it was,
Being very close to you just because.

All I have are good times and stories to share.
In my heart I know you will never be there.

There is never a good way to tell you goodbye.
I keep asking myself, "Why, baby, why?"

I know my love is now walking away.
I must let go because tomorrow brings another day.

A simple kiss, a great big smile.
I'm glad that I met you if only for a while.

    • By Joanna
    •  Published by Family Friend Poems April 2017

    Dedicated to Stephen LaViscount 8/27/1981 - 8/28/2009

    Lonely After Lover's Death

    Bitter silence surrounds me.
The sweet sound of your voice
Is now just a memory that haunts me.
The room that used to be filled with the brightness
Of your smile has become dark.
Without the warmth of your touch,
    I have grown cold.
    The sound of your heartbeat,
The sound that once made me complete,
Has withered away and left me hollow.

Come to me, my Sweet Angel,
    Touch me just once more.
Kiss me with the lips that once sang my name.
Wipe my tears with the hands that saved me.
    Embrace me with the arms
    That once gave me security.

    My Sweet Angel,
Save me from this lonely world.
Wake me up from this lucid dream.
Take me from this dark place.
Wrap me in your wings and carry me away.

    My Sweet Angel,
    I love you.

    • By Chrys Lea
    •  Published by Family Friend Poems April 2017

This is about someone I care about a lot, and I waited until it was too late to tell them how I felt. Now they like someone else, and I don't have much of a chance to get them back.

I Lost My Chance With You

I could dream of you forever,
But it wouldn't put me beside you.

I could call your name on end,
    But you'll never hear me.

I could ask a million questions,
But I'll never get the answer I want.

I could write a hundred poems,
But you would still never understand.

I could have said it before it was time to leave,
But I said it in a little note.

I could try to forget what I feel,
But I've pushed too much out already.

    I could lie to myself,
    But lying exhausts the soul.

I could give up on you,
But too much of me still loves you.

This poem is about the loss of a girl I loved so very much when I was young. Sadly, I let her slip away because I could not believe that I was worthy of her. Now many years later, I feel that I must pay tribute to that love.

Wanting One More Day With You

My memories are sacred of the you I used to know.
I remember all the places where you and I would go.

Time has made me older, and life has made me old.
My bones are thin and brittle; my body feels the cold.

Days when I was younger and warmer in the sun,
Days when you were with me, I was the chosen one.

Years went rolling past us, but I lost you along the way.
I would give all my tomorrows for just one yesterday.

  15. 13. Lost Love

    • By Robert B. Wolfe
    •  Published by Family Friend Poems August 2016

This is about my first love that I gave up when I went into the service. I never stopped loving her.

Poem About My High School Sweetheart

As I sit and ponder the day away.
I remember the young love I gave away.
I searched for a love like I left behind,
Too young to realize she was one of a kind.

Like a ship in the night,
    She sailed away.
    The hurt I felt
    I still feel today.

For years I walked along a lonely shore,
Dreaming of the eyes I'll see no more.
The love I felt, I still feel today
For the love of my life that I gave away.

  16. 14. The Lost Love

    • By Frank Romans
    •  Published by Family Friend Poems July 2016

This was written for the many before me who have lost a true love and for myself. The pain is not unique to me, and others have experienced the same, so this is our shared experience.

Poem About Not Wanting To Grow Old Alone

My lover's voice I long to hear,
My heart will race when she comes near.
To see her face and touch her skin,
And hear her words of love again.

Her voice is faint, so far away.
I will not see her here today,
Nor will I get to touch her hair.
I reach to touch, but she's not there.

I see the image in my mind
Of bygone days and better times,
Of laughter, love, and happy days,
Before we let it all escape

I do not want to be alone,
    Growing old, without a home,
Without my love close by my side.
    Emptiness, I can't abide.

If you will have me, I'll take you.
We'll start again, with love renewed.
    Together always, never to part,
Each holding the other inside the heart.

Be still my mind, it's just your dream,
A nightmare, really, it would seem.
Pride, you see, precedes the fall.
She won't be back, and that is all.

I lift my head and raise my glass
And toast those days that are long past.
To memories of love and home,
To days before I was alone.

  17. 15. The Bench

I wrote this poem a few months back after my partner and I split up...the bench was where we got engaged.

    Poem Remembering A Lost Love

    Sitting alone
On a bench that's made for two,
    Only one side is empty,
For that place is meant for you.
    As I look out
    Onto the beautiful seashore,
    Memories overtake me
    And wishes of making more.
Do you remember this special place?
And the moments we had here?
You made my life that day,
And that I will always hold near.
    I find myself walking,
    Not knowing where to go,
    But I always end up
In that special place that we know.
    I sit down, can't move,
    Waiting for you to show,
And when I feel your hand on mine,
    That's when I will go.
    Do you see, my darling,
That this bench was made for two,
And one day in the future,
It will be filled again by me and you.

  18. 16. The Pain Inside

This is a story about a girl I met and kept running into until I asked her out. We had a great night doing nothing in particular, just looking at the stars. It was one of the best nights, and nothing came of it.

Poem About Love That Got Away

I saw the stars that shine
When I looked into your eyes.
    I felt the pain inside
When your head was next to mine.
    Come tomorrow I'll be able
To love you in your dreams,
So when you're next to him
I hope you'll think of me.
    Will you remember the pleasure
When you look upon the stars?
    Go back to the night
You laid your head upon my heart.
    Tell your kids a story
Of a love that couldn't be,
And I'll tell mine a tale
Of what you meant to me.

  19. 17. Silent Tears

    • By Nyasha Bard
    •  Published by Family Friend Poems October 2015

This poem is about me and my struggles to let him go. It's been about two years now, and I still can't get myself to let him go. I hope this poem helps someone else who's going through what I am.

Poem About Not Being Able To Let Him Go

The day you said it's over was the day that I died.
When it became dark, I laid down and cried,
Going over and over in my head on what to do.
I could never find the courage to let you be you.

You called me last night and told me that you still cared,
But when the call was over I was empty and in despair.
You were my first love, someone who knew me so well.
But now that we aren't a couple, people can hardly tell.

You have moved on with some other girl, I see.
I cry to myself in the darkness, wishing that it was me.
But here and now I hear your name over and over again.
I cover my heart; my heartbeat weakens because of the pain.

  20. 18. Precious Memories

This is not a lost love between two adults; it is the heartache of losing the loving presence of two beloved grandchildren due to the bitter divorce of my son and his wife. For twenty years there had been utter devotion. The blessing now is that they are now happy in their own life and I have my memories.

Poem About Losing Grandchildren Due To Divorce

I will take those precious memories
And frame them with my love,
Then hang them in the hallways of my heart.
    I hope the fond remembrance
Of the joys that once were shared
Will overcome the tears that want to start.

    Little thought was given
    As the years went quickly.
We took good times for granted, that is true.
Perhaps, it all was for the best,
    Enjoying simple pleasures,
In retrospect, that was all we ever knew.

There was no use to ask the future
    To give away its secrets.
No blueprints for what would lie ahead.
It is the choices that are made,
    Experiences, both good and bad,
That down life's pathways, all are led.

    Looking back, I sometimes wonder
If there were things I should have changed,
A hurt that even now I might appease.
Has it all been taken from me?
No, time has shown a tender mercy
For I still have my precious memories.

  21. 19. Love Hate

I wrote this poem when struggling with being in love with someone and not really enjoying how it changed my thought process and influenced my actions.

Poem About The Dislike Of Love

Of all the emotions a person can feel,
Love is scariest and hardest to heal.
Excitement and mystery impossible to resist.
    Promises of magic perpetually persist.
We long for a connection that is as strong as it is true,
But love always does as love wants to do,
So to the emotion of love, I just want to say,
I'm much better off without you; I'm glad you went away,
'Cause I'd much rather live with a heart that can sing,
A smile that struggles to be more than a grin.
I might not be happy, but at least I'm not sad,
Holding onto happiness that I never had,
Love's an impostor, a thief in the night,
Reduces flames to embers that no longer burn bright.
Love captains your emotions and steers your fate.
Love is the only emotion that I truly hate.

  22. 20. Hating You Sweetly

The poem that you read, or are about to read, I wrote specifically for my best friend. My friend went through a tough time with a guy and he used her in a way, but he also wanted to be serious; it's complicated. She still likes him, but she looks at him and cannot read his emotions. She senses that he wants her back, but she's not sure. I wrote her this poem to have her emotions in some way written down. It was also something for her to keep to show that I care about her. Thank you for reading:)

Poem About Destruction In The Heart And In The Emotions

I looked for a word to say,
but could not find one that day.

I wished for a word that would stay in your heart,
That would show you exactly what tore us apart.

I hate what you did; I hate you so deeply.
I hate what you said; I hate you so sweetly.

I look at you and cannot tell what's in your eyes.
I talk to you, but all that comes out of your mouth are lies.

I see how you hurt and I don't understand.
All your true feelings are kept in a far away land.

    A land we called love,
    But now it's destruction.

A land God made from above,
and now we call it seduction.

It's true in a way we both long for each other.
But we both seem to long for another.

Another person we both thought we were,
But now it seems that this person I thought you were is now a blur.

This is a bitter sweet heart that will end in destruction.
And this is a bitter sweet part that needs some construction.

Why I hold on, I do not know why.
I should move on yes, but I'd rather just die.

You caused destruction in my heart.
You caused destruction because you thought it would be smart.

I hate you, I hate you so deeply.
I hate you, but I'm hating you sweetly.
