  1. 21. Mother

The story behind my poem is the abuse and neglect from my own mother. I used all that pain and turned it into something beautiful to help raise awareness of abuse.

  2. 22. The Unknown Murder

I am 15. I have been raped from when I was 5 years old to the day I turned 14 by my grandfather. I have been working on making my victim impact statement for court, and when I had to describe what this rape felt like.. all I could think of was murder. So this poem is a comparison between rape and murder. And in a way, he did murder me. He ruined the real me. The old me. The me that wasn't shy, that didn't have anxiety, was always happy... but now she is gone and nobody knew for years.

    There once was a murder,
But this one has a twist.
    The victim was my innocence,
    Stolen through his fist.

  3. 23. The Little Girl Lay So Still

I was abused at an early age of 5. When I was 5 I found out my sister was abused, too. She was 12 at the time. The day I wrote this poem I gave it to my husband to read. He cried as he said that he never really understood the pain of the victim until that moment. This seemed to help me deal with the pain in a new way. I could finally talk about it freely with him.

  4. 24. The Child Within

I wrote this poem after attending a meeting that centered on dealing with issues that stemmed from growing up in an Alcoholic home. At first it hurt but in the end it was worth it.

  5. 25. Love Hurts

My first relationship was with an older man who abused me mentally. I don't think he realized how bad off I was. Being so young and madly in "love," I kept coming back.

  6. 26. A Father's Love

I wrote this after attending a seminar on child abuse. I was sad to learn that most of the perpetrators of child abuse are trusted and known by the child. I made a solemn promise to myself to do my very best to watch and protect my son at all times. Remember, Parents, just mind that child

  7. 27. My Lonely Show

I was in a very abusive marriage, lucky to have survived it. Over the span of 20 years, I had been abandoned on a mountain while pregnant, had a gun held to my head, had my nose, ribs and ankle broken, and was raped. I wrote this poem after my ankle was broken. I was a well-known and respected community member. I was ashamed of what I was going through and spent years trying to change myself to try to prevent the abuse. I don't resemble that broken woman anymore, and I have found my voice.

  11. 31. I Need It From You

With no interest or a care.

  17. 37. Never Give Up Hope

I wrote a poem a long time ago, describing how I felt there was no escape from sexual abuse. Nine years ago I felt like I was trapped in a world of despair that I couldn't get out of. I had been sexually abused by a family member from the age of 9.

I wanted anyone in this position to know that even when it seems there is no hope or escape, there is. I never dreamed that one day I would be where I am now, but here I am. Proof that you can survive and things can change. Never give up hope.

Nine years ago, if you'd have said
I would be where I am now,
I would have laughed and thought you silly.
How could I escape my living hell?

  19. 39. Running From The Bear

I once read that abuse causes panic and fear and your body interprets that degree of fear as if you are running from a bear. Continued abuse means you are constantly running. My heart goes out to all of those suffering from any type of abuse.

    I've spent many years now
    Running from the bear.
Just when I think you're gone,
    You once again are there.

  20. 40. A Child's Fear

I am a 60 year old women with couples post traumatic stress disorder. I witnessed so much violence against my mother from my father as a very young child. To this day I am haunted by the disturbing and painful memories. I found writing this poem and a few others has helped me in a therapeutic way. Whether the poem is considered good or not doesn't concern me too much after realizing how writing it out has helped me. I do want everyone to like it but the journey to heal is more important.
