  1. 21. Hey Boy ... Hey Girl

I was inspired to write this poem after witnessing so many people, including family members and close friends, fall victim to crack-cocaine. By God's Grace, I've never experienced any drug or alcohol abuse but I've seen the many lives that have been destroyed and families that have been broken. Zeb, if your reading this, congrats...one day at a time.... RoseAnn (Diggs) Bennett September, 1987 © 1988

I like this a lot because it tells you what this drug can do and then its tries to convince you to not do the drug. And that's all you really need in this kind of poem one where it explains...

You think it's cool when you get high.
You don't even see the things that go by.
Time flies when you're having fun.
But one day your body can't handle

ADDICT AND WIFE. I'm a meth addict for 13 years now. My wife and I have been married for 15 years and been together for 17 years. Until just this past year I've hidden my addiction from her...

  5. 23. The Life Of Addiction

This was my life battling an addiction to alcohol/meth and pills. I have now been sober for a little over 4 years, and as I read back on my poems, I realize just how precious my life is today and how thankful I am that God delivered me out of my own hell.

So many emotions, it's out of control.
What have I done? Have I sold my soul?

The price is steep, and there's nothing to gain.

  6. 24. Lost Time

This poem is about how my life drastically changed from drug use in just 5 months. Everyone has a chance to change their life for the better. Making people proud of your recovery is the best high there is.

The power of addiction is a horrible disease.
You make think it relieves pressure,
    Or bring pain to ease.

  7. 25. King Cocaine

I wrote this poem to show the arrogance of an addict. No matter how dismal the situation may be an addict can convince him or herself that things ain't that bad. You cannot scare an addict because an addict has no fear. Even when we see our friends die of overdoses we still think it won't happen to us.

King Cocaine has come out smoking,
    I've taken hit after hit.
It's plain to see he's not joking,
And it's obvious I should to quit.

I am an addict living one day at a time. I do not say I'm in recovery, cuz I don't want to jinx myself. When all my using, craving dreams and thoughts leave me forever, then I will say I'm...

  8. 26. Razor's Edge

This is a story about me and my ex boyfriend's drug addiction. We broke up when he got sent to a four-year rehab for meth and cocaine addiction. I hope this can speak to others.

    A tear, crimson within itself.

  9. 27. Take Back Your Life

I use rhythm & rhyme to encourage people to break from their addictions. I wrote this poem for my brothers, both of whom battled substance abuse. Tragically, they lost those fights.
I know it's not easy. I understand the battle and while words aren't enough, I want you to know you're not alone. You are worthy. You are strong. You can do it. I wish you the courage to fight your battles.

  10. 28. I Need Your Support

I’ve had many (maybe too many) times where I chose the poison. Maybe it was a guy, a drink, my depression, food... and the people around me, most of them just told me what I should or shouldn’t be doing when all I needed was support. If you know someone struggling, hold them, love them, tell them they are strong. Support them, believe in them and trust that it will pass. Hold them along the journey.
