Teen Mental Illness Poems

Poems about Mental Illness by Teenagers

We live in a world where many illnesses that society once considered shameful are now openly discussed and accepted. Unfortunately, mental illness seems to still carry a certain stigma, a stigma that prevents many sufferers from seeking out help. Sufferers are completely powerless over their illness, yet many people try to make them feel guilty for having it, as if it were a choice. The result is often family problems and loss of friendship. We must remember, people suffering from mental illness need to feel accepted and loved more than anything. It is up to each and every one of us to stop the stigma.

hoping I could then accept myself,

    the burning self-hate never stopped.

    Living With Anxiety

Panic, worry, darkness closing in around me.
These are some of the words I could use to describe my anxiety,
but nothing I can say could speak of its entirety,
as I cry internally thinking I've lost my sanity.

    Do Not Judge Someone Else

Just because I have a smile on my face,
It doesn't mean that I don't cry when I'm alone.
    Doesn't mean I don't have problems,
Doesn't mean I'm not dying inside.

I love this poem but wished it were longer and it was actually like you were having a conversation with anxiety. Nevertheless, this is an amazing poem and so relatable.

It's what I think about every minute of the day,
In the car, during physics; "It's dangerous," they say.
In the morning, at school, in the bathroom, in bed,
"You'll fail. You're a failure," is all my mind said.
