War Poem

Come Home To Me

My daughter is about to leave to serve in Afghanistan. As a mother, I am both proud of her and afraid for her. I wrote this poem for her to keep with her, so that she will never feel alone. I also found that it really helped me to write it. Hopefully, it can do the same for those who honor me by reading it.

A Mother's Wish

© Mary Hodges
My darling Katie, words cannot say
How proud I am of you today
Youíre beautiful, courageous, good and strong
Taking up the cause to right the wrongs
The world has caused for far too long

Iíll watch you go so far away
So scared am I, but I will pray
Iíll send my angel to watch over you
To keep you safe and guide you through
This very special work you do

When I think of you Iím filled with pride
Iíll wipe the tears that I have cried
I know youíre doing what is right
And Iím behind you in your fight
Think of me, Iíll be your light

Donít be afraid, Iím here for you
Trust in yourself, you know what to do
This missionís important, soon youíll see
Youíre there to help someone be free
And when youíre done, come home to me
Come home to me
