Poems about Depression

Depression has a different quality than the normal range of sadness that you may feel throughout the day. When you are depressed you do not feel like being with anybody. You either sleep way more than usual or you can hardly sleep at all. Similarly, your appetite is either nonexistent or increases dramatically. Your energy level goes way down and you have a feeling of hopelessness about life. As difficult as it may be it is important to get out of the house and get some help. You are not alone.

  1. 1. Describing Imaginary Things

Many people don't understand that depression isn't just feeling sad: it's a real disorder, and you can't cure it by saying, "Buck up, sweetie." In a way, this poem is meant to show how most people simply don't understand depression and how people with it feel. A friend of mine was diagnosed with depression, and one night she desperately tried to explain to me what it was like. I was shocked by what I didn't understand. The poem was born from that and told in her perspective.

    "I'm tired," I say,
    "That's all."
And in a way, I guess it's true.

  3. 2. Demons Of Darkness

This poem is sort of about me and my demons, although I've never actually gone to a bridge to jump off it. I find comfort in writing about how I feel because generally it helps people to understand how I feel as well. It's hard to show people how we feel, so I choose to express myself through art, music and writing. I hope you enjoy my poem as much as I did writing it. Stay strong.

    Had driven her here.

  5. 3. Scars

This poem is about my battle with depression at the age of 16. I didn't know how to deal and cope with my feelings properly, so I did what many people who feel alone and want to punish themselves do--I self-destructed. Once I got therapy, writing poems about my experiences really helped. I regret what I did, but as this poem explains, it shows that no matter how low you get, you must remember you're not alone and you can survive.

  14. 12. From Oppression Comes Light

I started writing about my depression. I finished the poem quickly, but realized it had no resolve. I need a way for the depression to cease and then I found my answer... I opened my eyes. Truth sets us free and lies hold us down. In writing this poem, I realized that the beast or the depression is all a lie to myself from myself. I quickly thought of truth in my life and realized I have no reason to be down. Life is a blessing from God, and that is truth.

  16. 14. The Daily Battle

The inspiration behind this poem stems from a daily struggle with self-image in this day and age. Not feeling good enough for others as well as not feeling good enough about yourself also plays a part in this poem. It's the daily battle of trying to feel accepted and the struggle of learning to love yourself.
