My Sister, My Friend

©

Published by Family Friend Poems July 2006 with permission of the Author.

To me, you are an angel in disguise.
Full of intuition, you are intelligent and wise.
Always giving and helping through good times and bad.
You are the best friend I've ever had.
If I had one wish, it would surely be
To give you as much as you've given to me.
Though I've put our relationship through some cloudy days,
You've been my sunshine in so many ways.
Through trials and tests, right by me you stood,
And you gave me your hand whenever you could.
Thank you so much, my sister, my friend.
My gratitude for you has no end.

I never got the chance to grow up with an older sister. I have two sisters who are younger than me, but I never had anybody my age to talk to and stuff like that. I never even knew I had an older sister until about a year and a half ago.

Mixed emotions, confusion, angered feelings and a lot of questions that will never be answered. What do you do when you find out you have a big sister that you were deprived of growing up? My mom put my older sister up for adoption at birth in 1954 for unknown reasons. I grew up with my older brother, born in 1958, my twin brother and myself born in 1961. I had no clue that my older sister even existed until 2007 when she contacted us through email. It was in 2008 that I realized she was real and alive. My mom passed in 2007. I spoke with my sister for the very first time at the end of the year of 2016. My life has changed. I have, for the first time since 2007, a friend I can now talk to and share things with. It is a wonderful feeling inside, yet at the same time, I'm angry my mom deprived me of this all the years growing up.

My sister just found me and my brother a few months ago. Here's why I hurt but at the same time feel grateful she made the effort to find us. My mother told me after my dad died in 1966 that I have a sister in Bermuda. I was eleven and didn't think much of it, but it did surface a few times when I would reflect back when my dad was alive. I chose not to dig. Well, she contacted me through ancestry and I'm overwhelmed with the connection I feel toward her. I've always said I wanted a sister and why did dad have to die so young. Well, we talk and laugh and are getting to know each other and it feels great!! Can't wait to meet her. We're going to meet in person before this year is over. Sister Joanne I love you and want to hug you. Welcome to my world. Thank you, Jesus.

Dianna,
I went through the same thing. My sister and I never knew about our other sister for 40 years. My "new" sister contacted my mom and they met and chatted. Mom told me and my older sister in 2000, and we all met at Christmas at my sister's house. WOW! I, too, feel ripped off losing all those years. Still have questions of how and why, but I tell you I am so happy she has been in my life the last 19 years. We are so alike. We would have been best friends and sister. If she did not call my mom, I never would have known her. That's really sad, isn’t it?

I lived for 42 years not knowing I had a sister....I am now 54 and my mother or father (Father passed away 23rd Dec 2016) do not speak to me because I choose to make and stay in contact with my adopted sister who is sadly very ill with cancer. I have informed my mother of her illness and she doesn't want to know. Can't understand how a mother or father can be so so, so cruel. Out of 7 brothers and sister, only a brother speaks to me, and it's because he, too, choose to have contact with Mary!

I was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 48--the 1st in my family, so no family history. There began my journey. I had chemotherapy and 7 weeks of radiation. Thank God, I am fine now but I give my credit to early detection and also...my faith in God. He held me, He lifted me up so that I could help my family. (This is what happens to those of us diagnosed-we need to help our loved ones because WE have the knowledge)

I volunteer at my local cancer center because I need to give back- I was blessed to have a husband and kids who believed In healing and my positive attitude!

WOW! This is poem is what describes me and my sister. She has always been there for me even though I haven't made it so easy for her to be, she has been the big sister any one could wish for. She is my best friend. The one I don't know what I would do with out. She's my whole world. She will be gone soon put on her own and I don't know what I'm gonna do. This poem is us, who we are together as a whole. I love her with all my heart and soul.

I will be giving this to my sister, I am going to write it out very nice and frame it.
My mom and dad are past away and I became very sick with liver problems and had to have a liver transplant at the age of 49, my sister is 3 years older than myself. She was my backbone and full support through it all. I was in intensive care for 2 1/2 weeks on life support not knowing if I was going to make it. But my sister was there and she gave me so much power to fight this and I did. Was in the hospital for almost 7 months and she was there each and every day, well it has almost been a year now and she is still there 100% of the time and I am not doing to bad. She is a wonderful person and I love she so very much. I am sure I would not be here today if it wasn't for her. Thank you my sister Shelley and I love you with all my heart........Susan

I have six sisters but none of them are talking to me. I recently got married and I have a wonderful sister-in-law this poem makes me think of her. I miss my family but since my mother died in 93 my family has falling apart I love to read these poems makes me feel like there is some love left in this world. And I don't feel so alone.

I love this poem I don't have any sisters but I have a cousin that used to live with me and got really close to me. She used to go to college here but then got married and went away and now she even has a kid! I was remembering her the other day and I wanted to send her something so I thought I would re write it and send it to her.

I'm 10 years old my big sis left to move away. I always thought she would come back one day but my adventure still goes even though she is far away I will always love and hold her in my arms and tell her I love her, she is the best, even though we fight who cares she's my life. I love her so much like a parent or aunt she is one of a kind.

My brother emailed this poem to me on one of those days that was just not good. It reminded me that family is all that's really ever needed. I spent the rest of the day very happy because I knew how much family cared.

Loved this poem it was touching and inspirational. As I read it the thought of my little sis came to mind. Had to send it to her and choose to give it to her as a Valentine gift couldn't be any better. Thank you

I love these poems because they really soften my heart when I read them. I have two sisters and I am the youngest and all of our names starts with the letter A. We call ourselves triple A and we do a lot of things together. My older sister just went off to college and I miss her like crazy but I realized something. By her being away, made me love her even more. By missing her I began to realize that she meant more to me than I ever realized. So these poems really touch my heart. thanks so much.

Wow... what can I say about this one... it has touched my heart in so many ways... my sister is almost 21 years older then I am. I only have one sister and she is the best.. she is always there for me when I need her... when I was growing up and I was going through those awkward teenage years she helped me through them.. and the nights when I cried for my dad she was there...I love you sis, and I am so thankful that you are my sister..
