O Conscience
The human conscience is no mere accident of nature. It was deliberately created in us to protect us from going in a wrong direction, morally and spiritually. Because we are imperfect sometimes our conscience impels us to go in a wayward direction. But when properly trained, especially in accordance with Godly principles, it can protect us from certain detriment. Composed, not from personal experience, but as a fictional soliloquy this poem illustrates our need to think before we act.

O Conscience. Conscience!
Is it by you I shall abide?
My yearning for vengeance, -
O Conscience. Conscience!
Is it by you I shall abide?
My yearning for vengeance, -
shall I cast it aside?
And, for you, O conscience, shall my anger subside?
To wait for true justice, - which may never arrive?
While suppressing the anger, which torments me inside?
And all the while, bearing my humiliation? -
Why, - it's undignified!
No! I will get even, I will go forth in rage,
I will avenge myself and obtain my just wage!
I'll silence you O conscience! I'll thrust you aside!
I'll heed you not, yes you I'll deride!
And I'll slay the one who hurt me and damaged my pride.
I'll indulge in revenge until they've suffered and died!
Then over their corpse I will stand, satisfied! -
What!?
What's that you say, O my conscience inside...?
Once I realize what I've done, I'll be petrified?
Be accused? Tracked down? Arrested and tried?
Then await a sad fate a Grand Jury will decide?
Found guilty? Sentenced? And then in prison reside?
Gaze out from the confine that they'll throw me inside?
For the rest of my life until I've grown old and died?
While a wife, kids, and family, because of me will have cried?
O conscience. Conscience.
Help me avoid this demise.
I retract my rash words, - please, stay by my side.
Why should I be foolish and by you not abide?
Why should I be quick, O conscience, to wish you were dead,
When you can assist me to see much better pathways ahead.
O conscience. Conscience. The voice deep inside.
Please help me to trust you as a reliable guide.
