In the crowded room she sits alone,
Lost inside her tangled thoughts,
Her eyes unfocused on the floor,
She doesn't know me any more.

This girl with whom I shared my life,
Who loved me as I love her still,
My dear companion, my best friend,
Stolen now to this sad end.

I cannot just desert her now,
Though every visit causes pain,
To see her weeping, sitting there,
Confused, and lost, and in despair.

Just one of many gathered there,
Cared for, safe, but lost to life,
To sit alone in lined up chairs,
Lost to all of those who care.

I wish that I could take her home,
To comfort her and ease her mind,
Shut out this cruel life, close the door,
But she doesn't know me any more.

Now that you're gone and I'm alone
To face the future on my own,
I wonder how, as day by day,
I struggle hard to find a way,
To justify this life of mine,
Make sense of my remaining time,
To come to terms with loss and grief,
To reconcile and find some peace,
Now that your gone, and I'm alone,
To face the future on my own.

This house, the home we strived to make,
A haven for our old age sake,
Now filled with random memories,
Of happiness that used to be,
No voices call, just silence fills,
The spaces filled by memories,
I reach at night to one not there,
Survey by day her empty chair,
Just ghosts to wander from the past,
And hollow aching in my heart.

My family and friends all try,
To ease the pain as time goes by,
With gentle words and kindly deeds,
They strive to ease emotions needs,
They help, but nothing can replace,
The one that used to fill this space,
So I return alone, and shut the door,
Absorb the emptiness once more,
Eyes full, cheeks wet, I long to hear,
The voice of one I held so dear,
I pray for strength to try each day,
Be positive, and find a way,
Through passing days and months now flown,
Now that you're gone, and I'm alone.

She lifts her head at dawns first sigh and shrugs aside the sun,
And thrusts her tangled locks on high to where the winds still run,
With towering black and roiling shapes to make her presence known,
Where mortals stare at fading light to watch her coming shown,
She shakes her tresses free to where the wind will let them fly,
And spreads her arms and shakes her cloak to shroud with grey the sky.

The surging wind her ally now lifts high her dresses hue,
To fill horizons side to side to where the widest view,
Shows naught but drabness to the eye with only grey in sight,
And mortal man can only hide beneath the ladies might,
As she stares down with brimming eyes at landmarks speeding by,
With tears that spill and overflow as she begins to cry.

To scatter moisture far and wide to fall in showers vast,
Drenching field and tree alike as she goes speeding past,
Her trailing hems and soaking skirts press down over sodden ground,
To test the strength of those outside where no shelters found,
Where walkers caught out by her force can only curse and fret,
To speed their pace and bowing heads shield faces from the wet,

Then spent at last with drying eyes she lets the wind hold sway,
To let her garments thin and dry and speed her on her way,
The sun now stronger pours out light to weaken down her hue,
And shafts like arrows tear and rend to pierce her greyness through,
Then diffused to where she holds no form she whirls and fades away,
To bide her time to bring more rain, but on another day.

How would I live,
           without you by my side,
What life would breath into my soul,
           how would I survive,
You are my life, my love, my dream,
           my reason to exist,
The thought of life without you,
           I try hard to resist.

Imagine every day,
           with no sun in the sky,
The birds without a song to sing,
           as they go winging by,
Think of flowers without scent,
           a rainbow without hue,
For my love, that would be my life,
           if I lived it without you.

As life exacts it's yearly toll,
           and days pass faster still,
Ne'er mind the way the hair goes grey,
           for you are with me still,
For this I swear, on my true heart,
           if life I had again,
There are changes I would make,
           but one I would not trade.

For meeting you gave me the chance,
           to know meaning of true love,
To treasure life with one so dear,
           with companionship and trust,
With friendship and with loyalty,
           life's trials cannot deride,
I would face this mortal life again,
          if you were by my side.

Twas on a bright September morn, and without much fuss,
Our bowls club set off to Devon by bus,
The driver was amazed as could be,
Thinking, their average age must be 93,
He didn't know of the hard inner core,
Of these aged players that would rise to the fore,
That would show their real spirit the very next day,
When they arrived at Much Banter ready to play,
When driving winds and torrential rain,
Would not be allowed to spoil their game.

So, undaunted, when surveying the scene,
First viewed when stepping out on the green,
At the sight of the rinks that awaited us there,
Unless it was to sigh, and then to despair,
At the sight of the gullies, the dips and the bumps,
The patches of mud and grass scattered in clumps,
Their Captain, on seeing my horrified face,
Said "don't worry, it's not such a bad place",
"It plays well when you know it", he said with a smile,
"But to work all that out might take you a while".

Well, just in an effort to make things far worse,
The rain just increased to make players curse,
And to those in club shirts and some dressed in shorts,
It put sunny days and dry clothes in their thoughts,
But never the less, they bravely played on,
Till every last vestige of dryness was gone,
And the bowls struggled on in search of the jack,
Spray spinning from puddles that now held them back,
We played out eight ends while the rain it just poured,
I'm not even going to mention the scores,
Then we stopped, and all rushed in for tea,
Inside in the warm where we wanted to be,

We were plied with hot tea, scones, jam and cream
While our shirts and our trousers started to steam,
Then the Captains conferred looking up at the sky,
And hopefully said "It's starting to dry",
We were given the choice, as both Captains exclaim,
Stay inside in the dry or go back out again,
Well, we gazed out on skies looking blacker than ever,
And foolishly said, 'What!, and be beaten by weather"?
Now what on earth made us make that stupid reply,
To troop out once more neath grey leaden sky,
How foolish we were to think things might change,
Cos the minute we started it poured hard again,
Then the jacks were rolled out and hopefully we,
Sent out our bowls to where they might be,
With hands dripping wet and numb with the cold,
We failed to find grip on the woods that we bowled,

Five more ends were played out as the rain it just poured,
As we stoics played on and simply endured,
Then the Captains cried 'Stop, we've all had enough",
"It's time to give in and get out of this stuff".
So wet and bedraggled we trooped back in doors,
Our soaking wet shoes leaving mud on the floors,
Then our hosts had the best idea by far,
As they shouted out loud, "We'll open the bar",
Now those who know us, well you all know the score.
For bowlers like us it's what we came for,
With loud shouts of glee in one steaming rush,
They lined up at the bar in one heaving crush,
And as Amber liquid washed away all the pain,
They toasted Much Banter shouting 'We'll be back again".

I've got my driving test today,
Am I worried? O sure, I would say,
And I know that I really look a fright,
I have not slept a wink all night,
Oh God! It's time, I've got to go,
One more drive in the rush hour flow,
To wait at the Driving Test Centre door,
For the examiner to cross the floor,
He comes outside, Oh! I do feel queer,
He looks very strict and so severe,
My instructors face shows no alarm,
He say's "take it easy, just stay calm",
So I settle in behind the wheel,
Do all the checks, and then sit still,
The examiner tells me what to do, and so,
It's mirror, signal, maneuver, and off we go.

That's it, the drives over, I do feel so sick,
Now comes the awful questioning bit,
The distance to brake? How far to stop?,
Which sign has that triangular thing on the top,
Where can I park?, and when is the time?,
I am allowed to park on a double line,
What's the motorway speed? Oh lord what a bore,
I really don't think I can take any more,
Then it stops! Now he's writing, his board on his knee,
Oh Lord! this suspense is just killing me,
Then he stops, he looks up, and my heart starts to race,
He actually has a big smile on his face,
Then he tells me, "You've passed", Oh I can't take any more,
What! It hits me as he closes the door,
I've passed, Yes, I've passed, and as much as I try,
I can't tell my instructor, cause I've started to cry.

In quiet time, when day is done,
] rest my head for sleep to come,
As peace steals o'er my restless mind,
My memories your face will find,
Your gentle smile so sweet to see,
Eases my troubled thoughts for me.

In quiet times, in still of night,
When darkness shields the world from sight,
I lay awake and think of you,
I see your eyes, so warm, so true,
I feel at peace and without fear,
As in my mind I hold you near.

In quiet times, in dead of night,
My dreams take wing in silent flight,
To join with yours, the two as one,
Spirit and body, one become,
Lips joined, breath soft, hearts beating slow,
Two bodies merged in loves deep glow.

In quiet times, in dawning light,
My eyes tight closed, the dream held tight,
I feel our hearts entwined, at rest,
My cheek press'd to your soft white breast,
I keep my cherished dreams sublime,
And wait again for quiet times.

I quiet times, in days dull toil,
When reality ones dreams can soil,
I close my eyes and see your smile,
To comfort me for some short while,
And in my heart, through flight of time,
In quiet times, your dreams are mine.

When we are born into this wondrous life,
We hope for one that is peaceful, clear of all strife,
But from the first day, the very first day,
We never know of the price we must pay,
For whatever happens, in no matter what way,
There is always a price that we have to pay.

Even as children, innocent and free,
Not understanding how hard life can be,
Someone has to pay the price,
For our free and unworried life,
The lines in our parent furrowed brow,
Greying hair and ageing all show how,
For us to live in a carefree way,
It's our parents who have the price to pay.

When something drastic come to pass,
To tear our carefree life in half,
Tragedy happens to show that we,
Are not shielded from how hard life can be,
Death can strike any time to raise our fears,
To remind us what awaits us in future years,
To lose siblings, and parents, torn roughly away,
Is part of the price we all must pay.

It's fine when we are young and confidence high,
Do not notice how fast the years go by,
See our children spread wings to leave and roam,
To move far away, to start their own home,
We say we understand, they have their own life,
To love a new partner, make them husband or wife,
Make life without us, to make their own way,
To leave us alone, it's the price we must pay,
Just because they have gone, are no longer near,
Doesn't stop us from missing those we hold dear.

So, now left alone, just Derby and Joan,
To live out our retirement, at home, on our own,
You would think it would be all sweetness and light,
But this is the time when the price starts to bite,
To see the one you have loved for so many years,
Succumb to some illness, the sum of all fears,
To sicken and waste, to fade day by day,
The darkest, the hardest, the price we must pay,
To live on alone, and to wonder each day,
When will it end and what price must we pay ?
