Poems about Long Distance Relationships

To love at a distance can be torturous, as you always desire closeness to your beloved. But closeness and distance are not only physical definitions of space but also how we understand our heart. So while the physical distance between us may be great, that space may always be small within the heart. Holding close to the ones we love and trusting in that steadfastness can calm our hearts and soothe our minds no matter how far the physical distance between us. While loving another from far away may be difficult, faith in our love may keep us strong.

  1. 1. My Dearest Love

    • By Sherri Brown
    •  Published by Family Friend Poems October 2013

I wrote this after I got a phone call from my husband who is serving time in a state prison. He sometimes feels so insecure and thinks I am not waiting for him, but I will wait for him until the end of time; he is my life.

I see you in my thoughts and dreams.
When I awake, how real it seems.
You aren't here to comfort me,
But soon I hope you will be.

  3. 2. Sun And Moon

It's a poem about lovers who are in a long distance relationship.

You were like the sun who brought light
Into my cold, dark, and lifeless night.
You made me realize that no matter what I do,
My life will always revolve around you.

    • By Owain L. Derbyshire
    •  Published by Family Friend Poems December 2016

A poem about loving someone in a different country. No matter the distance, as long as you are willing, anything is possible. Needless to say, you may still have to wait to be with the person you love. A single person can change you. That's why it's important to follow your heart no matter what. Believe and the time will fly. Emotions are unique to each individual; hold on to them; don't let them go. Love is a bond unlike any other; it is truly special to me and was my motivation to write this poem.

    Words simply can't describe
    My feelings for you,
For my feelings are so many,
But words, they are so few.

This time, it's his birthday today and we are not together...

    Though at the moment

  7. 5. If I Could

    • By Lydia C. Dunne
    •  Published by Family Friend Poems August 2017

I wrote this poem to a guy I met online. We get on so well that if I could give him the world, I would. But alas, that's impossible, so I can only give him what I can and that's my friendship and love.

If I could catch a rainbow,
I'd do so just for you
So you could share its beauty
On the days you're feeling blue.

I wrote this poem for my boyfriend who is currently serving in Afghanistan.

  9. 7. A Soldier

I wrote this about a year after my husband came home from Afghanistan. I couldn't write or speak about it for a long time. This was the first time I wrote a little about my heartache during that time.

    He says he's leaving.
He'll be gone about a year.
He's headed off to fight the war,
And his time is drawing near.

  11. 9. The Miles That Separate

I met my boyfriend when I was 14, and he lived in a different city than me. We tried to make the relationship work then but realized it couldn't at such a young age, so he pursued me for 5 years. I wrote this on our current 9 month anniversary.

    Friends that discriminate
    Circumstances that kept us apart
And those people who broke our hearts

    • By Janna Rutty
    •  Published by Family Friend Poems March 2011

I'm 15 years old, and this poem is about my love for my boyfriend who lives far away. I miss him so much and love him so much that words will never be able to describe. I hope you enjoy it.

I lay in my bed and think about you.
I love you so much, I don't know what to do.
I feel your warmth at my side.
The pain in my heart moves to my eyes.

  13. 11. The Sobs Of A Goodbye

    • By Erica
    •  Published by Family Friend Poems December 2017

I have secretly been writing poetry since fourth grade. This one is very special to me because one of my favorite things to write about is dreaming. I do happen to have some trouble with sleeping, so I wrote this. I like this one. I hope you do too! :)

In the calmness. In the stillness. In the silence I awake,
Waiting in great patience for the egg of dawn to break.

For hair is golden thread woven from my golden harp.

  17. 15. Just One Word - If

I wrote this poem with the intention of sending it to my childhood friend whom I met again recently and found that he is still the love of my life and very special to me. I have never sent it.

If wishing were reality, then back in time we'd be,
To when we were children: happy and carefree.
If life could be that simple, how happy I would be.
You always were my special friend.

  18. 16. Patiently Waiting

    • By James Richmond Jr.
    •  Published by Family Friend Poems October 2013

My poem is titled Patiently Waiting, because my friend has been away on an 18-month sentence for being in the wrong place at the wrong time. I'm very lonely but being faithful because of the love in my heart. And I write poems to occupy my mind.

My heart is set on that glorious day
When your work is done and you're home to stay.
I'll be waiting right here, with open arms.
To hold you close and keep you warm.

  21. 19. Light Of My Life

    • By Barbara Harkrader
    •  Published by Family Friend Poems May 2014

I met this kind, sweet, and gentle guy, who not only became my friend; he also became a confidant. I could talk with him about anything, and he would be so supportive. He didn't judge, he didn't criticize, and he listened. He gave the insight to see things that I would not have seen on my own. Yet our two countries keep us apart. I wrote this poem to help keep his spirit near, to let him know that my heart will always feel the friendship that he has enlighten upon my life.

The light is shining oh so bright
The light you brought into my life
I have searched so high and low
    For my special glow
