Family is who we look to when we need help. We expect our parents to raise us, our grandparents to love us, and our brothers and sisters to always be there for us when the chips are down. They are our blood and we depend on that connection. When a family member doesn't live up to our expectations we feel abandoned. When a parent, grandparent or older brother or sister puts their needs in front of our own, we feel abandoned and alone. In such a case, we are likely to feel sad, alone and anger.

When a child is a victim of abuse by a member of their family, their world has changed forever. They may have loved their abuser and the abuser has turned the relationship into something sadistic and cruel. The victim of abuse is likely to feel very confused. How can they sort out the feelings of affection that they have for their abuser with the sick and disgusting act that was done to them.

When a family member becomes addicted to drugs or alcohol, it affects the whole family unit. No one is sure what to do or how to react. This is a often a time to practice tough love. Family members must be firm with the addict in order not to be guilty of becoming enablers for his or her addiction. When the addict reaches rock bottom, he or she will realize that nobody can rebuild their life but themselves.

Adopted children are often referred to as chosen. People with love to give and none to bestow it upon, seek out a child to raise with love. Some parents choose to conceal the child's adoption thinking that it will only cause him pain and sense of non-belonging. Others choose to tell their chosen child thinking that she will find out anyway. When a child finds out that he is adopted, it may gave rise to feelings of confusion and alienation.

Aging is a natural process of life. It begins the moment we are born. Strangely enough, most of us live under the illusion that we and our loved ones will never become old. When old age arrives, we are often unprepared. The natural order becomes reversed, with children caring for aging relatives. Those who need to be taken care of for the first time have a hard time accepting that they need help. Aging is something that we must all confront even if it is not the most pleasant topic.

Loneliness is one of the saddest conditions for a human being. It is not about being alone, rather it is about feeling alone. You may feel alone with your family, if you think that no one understands you. It is agonizing to be surrounded by people you love, and yet none of these people know what you are really about.

Anger is a human emotion that we all feel at one time or another. It is not the feeling that is problematic, rather it the expression of it which leads to so much sadness. In a family unit there is bound to be many times when one member is angry at another. How the individual chooses to express this feeling makes all the difference.

The anniversary of a father and mother or husband and wife is an occasion of great joy. Out of two people's love for each other a family was born. It is a time to celebrate and cherish every year.

"Love means never having to say you're sorry" is a really bad line to live by. Apologies are necessary in every relationship. Apologies are the building block of relationships. If a family has any hope of staying together, there will be frequent and sincere apologies.

What is a brother's place in family? To a younger brother or sister, he may be a guide to help traverse the complicated path of growing up. To an older brother, a little brother may be seen as a tag along and pain in the neck. Getting along with brothers and sisters can sometimes be difficult. As children grow up they usually find it easier to get along and relate to each other in rewarding ways.

Cancer is the dreaded "C" word. It has become such an epidemic in our society that people are loath to even mention its name. So many different kinds. Are some worse than others, who knows? Childhood Cancer, Breast Cancer, Leukemia.... This sickness may affect the whole family in different ways.

Children are the ultimate gift to two people who love each other and the ultimate inconvenience to parents that don't. There is no bigger responsibility, and yet a relationship with a child can bear the greatest rewards. A human being has been born into the world. Deal with it!

Dad's are often the most misunderstood in the family unit. As a rule, men have trouble displaying their emotions. This often causes problems in relationships with his children. A father plays a huge role in his children's development. Hopefully, he will live up to the challenge of being the best Dad that he can be.

When someone dies in the family, the whole family changes to adjust. That family member had played an important role. As the family grieves for the one who has passed away, they must accept that nothing will ever be the same.

When someone in the family is depressed, the whole family is affected. Depression is a silent disease that sucks the energy and joy out of a person's life. If is very difficult for one has not experienced depression to understand its significance. You might think, why don't they just get up and take a walk and they will feel better. If only it were that simple. It is important to get the relative into treatment and be sensitive and empathetic during their treatment.

When a man and woman get divorced, the whole family is affected. Often family members are confused as how to act around this new relationship. The couple that has gotten divorced may use family members as pawns in their arguments. Getting divorced may be necessary in cases when a relationship cannot be salvaged. However, the couple should keep in mind that the whole family unit will be affected by this change.

Every family has hopes and aspirations for themselves. Some may long to send their children to college if the parents have not had that opportunity. Other's may have a longing to live a better life in another country. Children may not share the dreams that their parent's have. Longing for a better tomorrow is part of the human condition.

When a person becomes a drug abuser, their whole family is affected. The may not be able to continue at their job, and they may begin to spend money to support their substance abuse habit. The family must be careful not to be an enabler to the abuser, and the must try to get the family member into treatment as soon as possible.

Death is life's greatest mystery. It is the most important question, because the answer affects how we live our lives. The question is simple; what comes after this? When we are faced with the death of a relative, we are stunned with grief. We don't understand, he was here and now he's not, where did he go?

Our family is the proverbial egg that we were hatched from. Everything about us. both nature and nurture comes from this place. Our family is everything. Sometimes we choose to run away from our roots because they are too painful to face. Ultimately however, if we do not face where we came from, we will have difficulty understanding our present and future.

Our fathers carry 50% of our genetic makeup. Hopefully they had something to do with raising us as well. Our relationship to our father plays a huge part of who we will become. Many people grow up without ever knowing their fathers. Others may be better off if they didn't know their fathers either. It has become difficult for men to understand what is expected of them in the realm of fatherhood. A good father is hard to find.

Many men will agree that being a father is the most rewarding relationship that they have. Children begin by loving their fathers unconditionally. It is a clean slate. There is nothing the father has to do to earn his child's love. The difficult part is not losing it.

Father's Day is not as respected and popularly observed as Mother's Day. There is a simple reason for this. Although almost everyone has difficult issues with their mother, we know in the end how much our mother loves us. The same is not true for Fathers. Because men have a more difficult time expressing their feelings to their children, many children go through life with the mistaken notion that their Fathers don't love them.

Humor is the bedrock of healthy relationship. If we cannot laugh at ourselves, life will become a tedious and stifling experience. Family life is difficult, there is no doubt about it. But if we take a moment to laugh at each other in a loving way and we can change the entire family relationship.

Grandchildren are said to be all play and no work. "Send em' home when they get cranky", is how the saying goes. However, grandparent's should not miss out on the opportunity presented to them. They are not expected to discipline their grandchildren and this opens up an avenue for a different kind of relationship. Grandchildren often rely on their grandparents when thing are tense at home. Parents often rely on their parents to help raise their children in this confusing and complex world.

The grandfather is the patriarch of the family. A family that has a living grandfather is a lucky one. There is a sense of continuity that is provided from hearing your grandfather talk about what it was like raising your father or mother. You may be given a perspective on why your parents are the way they are.

A grandmother's job never ends. Many grandmothers in our society step in to raise children when their mother is unavailable. Even in the best of situations, having a grandmother to help with child raising and to provide a softer touch is often a welcome intrusion. The other side of the issue is that grandmothers have to realize when it is time to step back and keep their mouths shut. If there is a healthy father and mother, they are the ones with the final say in how to raise their children.

To be a grandparent is not an easy job. Your grandchildren are counting on you to love unconditionally in a way that their parents can't. They're counting on you to listen, really listen, without judging right or wrong. It is often assumed that you have no life of your own, and that you only exist to be called on when you are needed. This of course is not true. At the same time do not miss this opportunity that you have been given, a chance for a relationship with the next generation.

A family is like a body. When a family loses a loved one, it is as if they have lost one of their limbs. The contribution that was made by the family member that was lost can never be replaced. That person is gone. What that person has brought to the family is gone. Is it important for the family to take time to grieve for this loss. Doing so is a matter of respect for the relative that has passed. It is also a step that the family must take to acknowledge its loss.

Growing up is hard to do. It is hard for children who are facing challenging situations for the first time. It is also hard for parents to adjust to the needs of their constantly changing children. Parenting children is an exercise in slowly giving more space for the child's independence, while at the same time knowing that children always need their parents.

The essence of life is hardship. That is not a negative statement. It is simply a statement of fact. Every day brings new challenges. Living with the expectation that life will be difficult makes hard times easier to deal with. When a family encounters a hard times they will need to join together and face the challenge as a team. They will need to be sensitive to the needs of individual family members each of whom will face unique difficulties. Life is not easy, but having a support system makes life that much easier.

The holidays mark a special time for family. It is a time to get together. It is a time of memories of past holidays. Holidays are a time of joy and togetherness.

"Home is the place when you go there, they have to take you in." In a successful life, we usually try to grow away from the home of our youth. In spite of this fact, it is good to know that it is there. It is nice to know that our parents are still living there and that the home of our youth is still maintained. When the sad day comes that our childhood home no longer exists, we must make our own home that permanent place or live with a certain degree of rootlessness.

Being a husband and having a husband are both difficult positions to be in. It is a great blessing to have found your partner but with great blessing comes a great responsibility.

This is unfortunate because we are more likely to spend time with friends than relatives. It has become more rare to have relatives that are also friends. It is my contention that friction in relationships is an opportunity to realize our differences and accept that although we can never fully understand each other, non the less we accept and love each other.

A loving marriage is one of the greatest achievements of our times. Divorce is at an all time high, and the general belief is the marriage is a pain in the neck. The fact is marriage is a pain in the neck. Relationships come with responsibility. But, marriage offers an opportunity to share the closeness of a committed relationship, to develop the inevitable friction which sharing your bathroom causes, into greater love and understanding. This opportunity is not offered anywhere else. This is the case for marriage.

The memories that we share of our family are those that shaped our personality. Whether we like it or not, our personality was formed by our parents, brother's and sisters, and the environment that we grew up in. Some do not want to remember and choose to believe that ignorance is bliss. They cut off ties with their families and interact with them only on the major holidays. They choose to act as if they were hatched out of an egg as a full grown adult. This thinking is catastrophic. The truth is we can only grow as human beings when we choose to confront our past. If our childhoods experiences were abusive, then we don't necessarily need to face our abusers, but we do need to face the fact that we were abused only then can we move forward in our lives.

Our lives are so busy and sometimes we live so far from our families. We miss the relationships with our families and often we do not even share important life events with them. We need to move back towards our families. If not in actual distance then at least we must move closer in our hearts. We live in a time where there are unprecedented communication possibilities. No one will ever love us unconditionally like our family can. We'd be fools not to take advantage of this opportunity.

Mother's are the most important individuals in our lives. We begin our lives completely dependent on them for our every need. Many believe that we search for aspects of the mother child relationship throughout our entire lives. Love it or hate it, she was your first love and will never be gone from your heart. You will always be in her heart also. Try telling her not to love you, try telling to her to forget you existed. It is impossible. Unless you are a mother yourself, you can never understand the intensity of this love.

The mother is the center of the family, the central command center. Everything depends on her, and her children and husband expect her to take care of everything.

The actual time that a child spends with his mother varies, but the impressions last forever. No one ever forgets their mother. The closeness that was shared in the first few years when the child looks to his mother for every need, and for approval is never forgotten. The bond is deep and forever.

Mother and daughter relationships are complex because the daughter looks to her mother as a role model of what a woman is. As she grows up and sees other woman who live their lives differently, she chooses between imitating her mother or other significant influences in her life.

Respect for fathers and mothers is a common tenant of most cultures. With the advent of modern psychology, we now question this idea. If we blame our parents for our problems, why should respect them? Respecting our parents is good for us as well. Respect is to admit that we don't have all the answers and neither did our parents. We recognize that our parents had to overcome their own childhoods as well. Respecting our parents is respecting ourselves and ultimately respecting the cycle of life.

A man lucky enough to have a faithful wife to bear his children is truly lucky.. A Wife and a Mother is difficult enough on its own. A man wonders around as a half a person until he can convince a woman to be his better half. This is not an easy job on his wife's part.To give the gift of children is a present that a man can never understand. First a woman's body goes through the pain of pregnancy and childbirth. Afterwards her body is left to heal. This is only the beginning. The bond that a mother builds with her child causes her worry throughout her life. The spiritual umbilical cord is never severed. The positions of being a wife and mother are truly a monumental task, yet they do have great rewards.

Until we become parents it is impossible to fathom the sacrifices that they made to raise us. Only once we ourselves have felt the joy and burden of bringing a new life until this world do we realize how much we owe our Parents. Prayer is communication between man and God. A family that incorporates prayer into their lifestyle are giving the ultimate gift to themselves. Life is difficult and suffering is an inevitable part of life. A family that prays knows that they can turn to God and be accepted and loved for who they are. Every human being needs to turn to God with his or her triumphs and failures and know that life is meaningful. A family that prays together has the ultimate support system.

Pregnancy is the privilege of experiencing God's miracles on earth. "In my flesh I see the mark of God". Nowhere is this more apparent than in the experience of a pregnancy. Science has made is made it possible to witness the baby's growth on sonogram. Once you see that, there's no turning back. Watching and feeling this little miracle grow inside you, knowing that one day you will hold this child in your hands is one of the greatest gifts that can be experienced.

Prison is the punishment that keeps on taking. Long after the individual has regretted his or her sin and wishes to go back to living a productive life, he must stay in prison wasting his precious years on this earth. Almost anything you take from a man can be given back except time. He can never reclaim the time that was stolen from him. He can never experience his children growing up for they are already grown. He can never experience those precious moments with his wife for most likely she has moved on. Of all the crimes that man commits to go to prison, in 99% of cases, the crime of prison the society perpetrates on man is worse.

To be part of a family is to be in a relationship. Husband and wife, parents and children, sibling and sibling are all in relationship. There is an opportunity for a closeness and trust that cannot occur outside family. Coming equally with the possibility for closeness is the chance of hatred and estrangement. It is not easy to maintain positive relationships with those that we are naturally closes to. There are tensions that exist between family members that are not present in other relationships. Being in close proximity means that you know of persons great attributes as well as their faults. Maintaining family relationships are a tremendous challenge.

Retirement is something that people look forward to all of their lives. It is a lucky few however, that truly get to enjoy their golden years. Factors like health concerns, death of a spouse, and monetary issues are all things that can prevent people from taking full advantage of their retirement years. My motto is enjoy life while you can because you never know what is going to happen later. Those that are lucky enough to really enjoy their "golden years" are truly blessed.

A family reunion is a time of great joy and excitement. In the world that we live in, families are often scattered around the globe. Loved ones may not see or talk to one another for years, even though there is but a plane ride seperating them. A family reunion is a time to remember that although you may feel close to your neighbors and friends, there is nothing quite like family. These are the ones who are closest to you in blood. You share the same history and anscestors who cared for you. When you really need help, family members are the ones who are most likely to come through.

How does a couple continue to kindle the spark of romance after years of marriage? This is a question that couples have been struggling with since time immemorial. What is the definition of romance? This is a complex question but I think that any act that helps a couple feel that they are more than roommates and that reminds them of the special feelings that they hold for each other deep inside is a romantic gesture. Feelings of love are often hiding just below the surface. All it takes to bring these thoughts out is some thought about what will make your partner feel loved and sexy.

There are some occasions that bring families together which are times of sadness. These occasions, such as death or sickness in the family, or a family member who is going through a paticuraly trying time, call for family members to come together and support one another. In this way they can comfort one another and help make a diffiucult time that much easier. If they do not come together, not only have they left a family member unsupported, but they have also lost out on an oppourtunity for closeness.

Just as the earth goes through seasons, so does a family in the course of time endure seasons. Marriage, falling in love, and the birth of a childhood are all times of renewal and spring. Long pleasant periods of calm that some families are blessed to have are like the feeling of an endless summer. As we and our children grow older, our leaves start to change. We start to experience autumn. This may seem like dying but it is really only signs of a new phase of life. The times of crises and hardship are times for the family to stay close together, help eachother out and endure what are sometimes the frigid winds of change. This period is akin to a families wintertime. Life is full of seasons and changes which are best experienced with the support of friends and family.

The writing of a short poem is more difficult than the writing of a long one. Every word is examined carefully by the reader. Each word must be the chosen carefully for maximum effect.

Brothers and sisters love eachother. When the chips are down and it comes to defending a sibling, have no doubt that brothers and sisters will defent each other to the death. The irony is that somethimes they cannot say a civil word to one another. They love eachother but they just can't stant eachother. In order to understand this, we have to look at the nature of sibling relationships. Brothers and sisters are so close together that they cannot help but compare themselves. Invariably, one will have talent in an area where the other doesn't. This may feel threatening to the other one. The only way to combat sibling rivalry is to nurture a secure sense of self so that no one else can possibily be seen as a threat to me.

When a family member has an illness, the entire family can be affected. The way that the illness is dealt with has an affect on the entire family. Some Mothers or fathers that are have an illness discuss the illness as little as possible with their children because they don't want to worry their children. This can often have the opposite effect. Because the children know something is going on, but they don't know what, it often feels more scary for them. It is the same with children who's siblings are suffering. It is often best to give them as much information as they ask for. As hard as this is to believe, dealing with an illness can be a growth experience for the people involved if it dealt with in a sensative and mature manner.

Having a sister in your life can either be a wonderful or terrible experience, depending on how your relationship is. If you have an older sister and you are a girl, she can often show you how to navigate the way through some of the more difficult areas of growing up. This is also true is you are boy. Your older sister can help explain to you how to interact with the opposite sex. Younger sisters are a joy as well. They often worship their older siblings and it can be a nice experience to be admired. Sisters Rock!

The relationship of a son towards both his parents is very complex. A son may feel a close bond with his mother, yet see his father as an adversary and competitor. When a son sees his father having a female relationship he will ultimately try to either model or reject his fathers example of relationships with woman. These are some of the underlying issues that go on. Having a son can be one of the greatest joys you will ever experience, but it is also a bit scary when you realize that you are his primary role model.

There is nothing more painful than fighting between family members. Whether is between parents who are married or divorced or between siblings, there is nothing more bitter than watching people who once loved eachother say painful things to one another. Family knows eachother better than anyone. They know eachothers vulnerabilities and can hurt eachother in the most private and intimate places. So before you say something to a family member, no matter how much you think that they deserve it, remember, the pain memory of this encounter will last much longer than the satisfaction of a good one liner.
