Goodbye Love Poem

Hoping For Their Love

I was married for 34 years. During those 34 years and raising 2 children my marriage survived because I loved him deeply. His love for me was never returned. His love for self and image was all he could give. But, I never lost hope. My children grew up and had families of their own. Each day during my empty nest period, I would hope for a show of his love, a gift of his love. This poem is about the gift he gave me instead. I left as a gift to myself.

The Gift

A gift of wisdom given,
The cargo stamped in red,
It's finally here, my wait is done!
Still my heart sits filled with dread.

This gift will be so different,
It's the love I waited for,
A show of love you've given me,
That makes me love you more.

Yet tears flow down my face,
To see the gift you gave,
This box sits widely opened,
With contents I can't save.

My senses fall in silence,
The anticipation lost,
Feel the corners! look for it!
No.... Its just an empty box.

My gift from you is NOTHING,
Your THANK YOU for my years,
But, this box shall not stay empty,
I'll fill it with my tears.
