Goodbye Love Poems

Goodbye Love Poems

Saying Goodbye Can Be So Hard

Saying goodbye to your lover is a heartbreaking moment. You feel as if a part of you is being separated and going of to do something else. You are used to relying on each other for everything. Every decision from the smallest to the largest is made with the consultation of your life partner. When you are separated, you must accustom yourself to living single. You don't have the constant reassurance of having someone to lean one. This feeling takes getting used to. Hopefully you will not be alone for long.

67 Poems about Leaving Someone You Loved

  1. 1. Don't Look Back

This poem is about looking for love but never really getting over who you loved before. You try to make it work, but the same old problems occur.

    Love doesn't happen overnight.
Love doesn't argue about what's wrong or what's right.
And don't expect to find a love that will last
if the only place you're searching is in your past...

  3. 2. The Boxes In The Hall

    • By Adrian Baillie
    •  Published by Family Friend Poems December 2008

This poem is about the heartbreak of my wife walking out. We are in a divorce that I never wanted. Finally after two years I have accepted that she doesn't love me anymore, and this is my way of letting go of her.

In every room of our time together there is a box
    Of memories we shared.
Now is the time to pack away
    With sadness and with care.

  5. 3. She Once Held A Dream

I wrote this poem after watching someone close fall madly in love, then seeing and feeling her pain as the romance broke up. The poem starts with an introduction placed above the poem's title. Below the title there are six four-line stanzas. There are ten syllables in every line, the rhyme scheme being AABB.

This tale's of someone who once held a dream
Till the day she fell apart at the seams.
A dream that vanished up into thin air
That left its trail of sorrow and despair.

  6. 4. I Shall Not Care

Some thought “I Shall Not Care” was a suicide note written by Sara Teasdale (1884-1933), but this poem was published more than a decade before she took her life. Each stanza of this poem has a different focus. The first stanza shares about no longer having any cares or pain after death. In contrast, the second stanza focuses on another person, almost as if saying that person will only come to realize his love for the speaker after her death.

When I am dead and over me bright April
    Shakes out her rain-drenched hair,
Tho' you should lean above me broken-hearted,
    I shall not care.

  7. 5. When You Are Old

This poem by William Butler Yeats (1865-1939) was published in 1893 when he was 28. He was an Irish poet who won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1923. This poem is addressed to the speaker’s lover, and in the end, shows the love did not last. People consider this poem to be about Maud Gonne. He loved her, but she married another man. This poem follows the ABBA rhyme scheme, which is not seen frequently in poetry except for Italian (Petrarchan) sonnets.

When you are old and grey and full of sleep,
And nodding by the fire, take down this book,
And slowly read, and dream of the soft look
    Your eyes had once, and of their shadows deep;

    • By Karren
    •  Published by Family Friend Poems January 2009

Letting love go is never easy, but if we really love someone, we must learn how to be strong and let them fly if it means they'll be happy!

You held my hand so tight.
We watched the stars all night,
    But still I realize
    There's something in your eyes.

  10. 8. Alone In The Dark

    • By Gillian Craig
    •  Published by Family Friend Poems February 2015

I wrote this poem when I was left heartbroken by the man I loved and adored. To this day, he still holds a very special place in my heart. I felt so alone and literally cried the whole time I was putting pen to paper for this. I still love him, and inside I'll always be his angel.

    I've never felt so alone.
The tears stream down my face.
I only want to feel you
And lie there in my space.

  11. 9. The Pain Of Goodbye

So many times I've had to say goodbye, and I know from experience that the person may be gone, but the pain of goodbye stays.

I could fill the oceans with the tears I've cried
Or cover the entire earth with blankets of failed tries.
Countless times what I thought was truth became a lie.
Everything is falling apart, and I'm sick of asking why.

  12. 10. Lost Love

This poem is for all the people who have had to say good-bye to a love that just was not meant to be but was real and honest. Not always do we get to be or stay with the person that we love, and we have to let them go and wish them well as they move on.

The most amazing moment was when we met.
The love and time I have shared with you
    have all been without regret.

  13. 11. Broken Hearts And Prayers

    • By Alexis Daniels
    •  Published by Family Friend Poems November 2013

This is for the man who broke my heart. I gave him all I had and more, and he took everything I did for granted. We are still together, but I'm still praying for a change in him. I love you, baby; please realize that.

When your heart chooses a path and you walk so far,
nothing can turn you back from where you are.
No pain, no scars can make you turn away,
there's nothing that anyone can do nor say.

  16. 14. Love Hurts

    • By Kaylee
    •  Published by Family Friend Poems March 2016

My first relationship was with an older man who abused me mentally. I don't think he realized how bad off I was. Being so young and madly in "love," I kept coming back.

    I don't get how you can't see
All the things you did to me.
    If only you knew
All the pain you put me through.

  19. 17. Last Walk Down Memory Lane

This poem expresses the sadness of marriage as it ends...looking back on the happiness that once was.

As we sit here in silence, no longer husband and wife
I can't forget the vow I made to love you all my life...
Our last walk down memory lane fills my eyes with tears
As I find us walking hand in hand in our high school years.

  20. 18. Blessing In Disguise

I met a boy, and he left his girlfriend for me at the end of the school year, and we fell in love during the summer. When we went back to school in the fall, he cheated on me with his ex. I continuously went back to him every time he cheated on me with the hope that things would be better. He used me, and I was distracted by the love I truly felt for him. My first love ended up leaving me for another girl exactly how he left his ex before me. He left without a word after a year and a half of dating.

I still remember the moment we met
The time we shared, I'll never regret
That summer in the sun we spent together
I can only hope you'll always remember

To all the strong females who have been hurt in the past and don't believe they will ever find a true, real man again, this poem is a lesson learned the hard way, for you.
