I can't prevent attitudes
from knocking upon my door,
but I decide which to let in
and which ones to ignore.

To care to say grace,

That you cannot fall.
Sometimes what will make you trip
Is something really small;

To justly give into pride.
You can learn useful lessons,
Sometimes from a little child;

You're not that excellent
By earning other's applause.
Same folks that shout your praise
Can still point out your flaws;
Cool it down.

Don't get so confident
To presume you're the only one.
Should you die today,

This brand new day I go in faith,
But I know not what lies in wait,
So dear God, this morning I pray,
Take control and lead the way.

I do not see with these two eyes,
I cannot tell where danger lies.
Please, dear Lord, be my guide.
Let me not stray from Your side.

Show me today the journeys to make.
Steer me on the right paths to take.
Grant me grace to discern your will,
For when to strive and when to be still.

Help me to love and trust You more
And radiate Your love to my neighbor.
Then bring me back safe and sound,
And let my praise for You abound.

There is this funny guy I know.
Sleepy by name and sneaky as can be.
I never know where he comes from,
Only that he creeps up on me.

He is very cunning, you see.
He often makes me feel like a fool.
He jerks my head or slurs my speech,
And he sometimes makes me drool.

He can put things in a swirl
So I can't tell which is which.
And the stuff I don't want to let go,
He easily takes out of my reach.

Still, a generous guest is he,
Always comes with a soothing balm,
To lull my body and renew my strength
And make my mind to be calm.

When he leaves and where he goes,
That is hard for me to say.
But as rude as he is, I'm always glad
For Sleepy's sly visit every day.

Vagaries of this life can be
Tough and hard to fathom,
And yet have they conquered me?
Look how far I've come.

As I climb up its hill,
Slopes and jagged edges and all,
There are times I slip but still
At no time did I fall.

As I tread along its way
Sometimes I run into bends,
Stumbling blocks on some days
But never into dead ends.

As I sprint down its lane,
Hurdles seem to abound,
Yet the tripping now and again
Still can't bring me down.

Whims of life that lie in wait
Though I may not have a clue,
Firm is my will, strong is my faith.

It's by practicing such kindness
God's love in you will glow.

Be sure to give to people
who have no means to repay.
Such will always return to you
in the most unexpected way.

Practice giving to friends,
if only to make them smile.
Doesn't matter if they have it all.
It is a gesture worthwhile.

Be generous with your folks.
Kindness to outsiders alone;
Just how hollow would it be?
For charity begins at home.

Leave a gift for someone
who won't find out it's from you.
Directing all the glory to God
makes giving pure and true.
