Fun & Serious Family Poems for Children

All children are born into a family, and it’s with those people they create bonds, strong relationships, and lasting memories. Even when brothers and sisters get on each other’s nerves, deep down they love each other. Grandparents, mothers and fathers, and siblings hold a special place in a child’s heart.

  7. 5. Brother Trouble

I was the middle of three sons in our family. I remember how different my relationship was with my older brother as compared to my younger one. Even though we are all now in our eighties, traces of that difference remain.

Of all the burdens I must bear,
    My brother's number one.
Our parents really messed up there.
    They've raised an awful son.

  9. 7. What Are We Going To Do With You?

This is a poem I wrote about my crazy little sister. I hope at least someone can relate to this! My dad said we were going to wrap her up in a box and sell her to buy a beaver. We like beavers...

Sometimes you drive us all crazy.
    Sometimes me more than others.
    But sometimes you yell
and kick at nothing for no reason.

  11. 9. Boys

When I wrote this poem I had three daughters, no sons, but I had five grandsons. So true to facts, the words in this poem are some life tales and adventures. Then later, joy, joy, I had a granddaughter, then eventually two more grandsons.

Bullseyes and targets, marbles and darts.
Little green bugs and bicycle parts.
Frogs in their pockets, worms in their shirt.
A boy is a boy for all he is worth.

  12. 10. Mommy Will Sing A Lullaby

I was inspired to write this poem for my daughter who is a single parent to a beautiful little boy, my grandson, Oliver, who is 4 years old. Every night she takes him up to bed and sings lullabies to him while holding his little hand. It is incredibly moving to watch. These are precious moments and should be treasured.

All tucked up and snug in bed
as angels stand guard above your head,
Mommy will kiss away your fears.
She'll stroke your hair and dry your tears.

  16. 14. Great Grandpa

Hi, my name is Alan Balter, and I am a retired university professor. I worked at the University of Illinois and Chicago State University where my job was to prepare teachers for children with special needs. Now, in retirement, I write fiction, personal essays, and poetry. I wrote "Great Grandpa" to honor the man and to preserve his memory for younger people in the family.

Great Grandpa is a wise old man who says he's ninety-four.
He tells me that he lost his leg fighting in some war.
When I was just a little tot with eyes and nose still runny,
He swears that he forgot my name, so now he calls me Sonny.

  18. 16. Open Arms

Just a bit about my dad and me. I have two sisters, and my parents are divorced. I see my father as often as I can, but I never see my mother; she now lives in another state, but she used to live only hours away and could have visited me. But she only visited my sisters who were in a completely different state. Anyway, I do have a step-mother who is awesome. My dad is my rock, and since it is Father's Day soon, I wrote this poem.

You're the one with open arms
    When the darkness closes in.
When the shadows come and the nightmares make it hard to sleep,
You're always there to chase them all away.

  21. 19. In My Granny's Lap

I recently started writing inspirational words to friends or acquaintances who were ill or missing a loved one. At the urging of others, I began to compile the poems in a notebook. I will leave copies of these for my adult children, upon my demise.

  22. 20. Muffins With Momma

Growing up, I began baking muffins fairly young, initially with my Mom, later on my own. It fascinated me. Eventually I began recruiting my little siblings to help. Baking is an art, not a science, and any art has a bit of magic about it. Maybe it's my Chestertonian view of life. What turns flour, butter, eggs, etc. into cookies or muffins? Magic.

    Momma's in the kitchen
    making muffins for me.
    There's eggs, raisins, milk
And white powdery stuff I see.
