New Year's Poems

Inspirational Poems for New Years

The new year is a time to celebrate new beginnings. It is time to celebrate having a clean slate. Anything is possible because the past doesn't matter. It has become a time to celebrate our romantic relationships by kissing at the moment that the new year begins. Many of us also celebrate by getting totally wasted. Hey, don't knock it until you try it. But please don't drink and drive. Celebrating the new year by saying that your life and the lives of others on the streets are not important is not exactly life affirming

24 Poems for the Start of the New Year

  1. 1. Happy New Year!

I never wish for fame and fortune at the start of each New Year. Only health, family, and happiness are the things that I hold dear.

    Brush away old heartaches.
    Learn from our mistakes.
    Another year is finally over.
    A new dawn awakes.

Hi Rosie, I'm so sorry that you feel so sad and broken. Having been there myself, I know how hard it can be. Hang on in there, sweetheart. Things can only get better, believe me. God Bless.

  3. 2. Ring Out, Wild Bells

This poem is an elegy (a poem of lament for someone who has passed away) and uses an ABBA Rhyme Scheme. It was written about Alfred Tennyson’s friend, Arthur Henry Hallam, who was engaged to Tennyson’s sister. Arthur Henry Hallam died suddenly at the age of twenty-two. In this poem, Tennyson (1809-1892) shares about casting aside all the bad and painful things of the year. Due to the heartache that year brought him, Tennyson was ready to put the grief behind him. This could also be considered a New Year’s poem about starting anew. Alfred Tennyson’s first son was named Hallam, after his best friend.

Ring out, wild bells, to the wild sky,
    The flying cloud, the frosty light;
    The year is dying in the night;
Ring out, wild bells, and let him die.

  5. 3. The Year

In this famous New Year’s poem by Ella Wheeler Wilcox, she shares the reality of each new year. Time continues to move forward—years come and they go. Every new year is marked by great expectations, but the reality is that each year is filled with both joyous and sorrowful moments. This poem is made up of rhyming couplets (two-line stanzas).

What can be said in New Year rhymes,
That’s not been said a thousand times?

The new years come, the old years go,

  10. 8. This New Year

    • By Aleena
    •  Published by Family Friend Poems February 2011

I have been feeling in a rut --and kind of blue, but I made it my New Year's resolution to be more positive and more "out there."

Even during the worst of times
When I feel the years go slipping by
    Life seems rife with possibilities
    When the New Year arrives.

  13. 11. In The New Year

    • By Trupti Paliwal
    •  Published by Family Friend Poems January 2017

I wrote it on January 1, 2017, when I was sitting alone in my house. I have so many friends online, but no one is free to talk.

    In this new year,
    Let's talk more, chat less.
    Let's call more, text less.
    Let's meet more, Skype less.

  14. 12. Happy New Year

When I wrote this poem, I was in Africa on a mission trip. I missed my home, my friends, my family, and the snow. I kept reminding myself not to dwell on the things I was without, but instead on the wonderful things I did have. I ended up having the time of my life!

    As the world celebrates
    With fireworks and cakes
    I'm standing here alone
    Far away from home

  15. 13. January's Dawn

My poem is about the New Year and reminiscing of our cherished memories past and also our past regrets and the loved ones we have loved and lost and those we still have in our midst. Memories never really die or say goodbye; they reside within our hearts, they light the spark of future memories to be born, and the regrets hopefully teach us wisdom and lessons to keep us on a good path for each New Year! In writing this poem, I wish everyone a New Year filled with many blessings!

Deep in this dark, cold, last night of December,
is one tiny flame of a flickering ember.

like so many memories of Decembers gone by,

Resolutions are no sooner made than broken. I no longer make promises I can't keep.

    Another year is almost over.
A new one's about to begin.

  19. 17. Seasons Yet To Come

We get a new calendar every year at work, and I just love to look through it and imagine the year to come! I mark birthdays and special days and look forward to them greatly. This helps get me through long, drudgery days in the cube farm!

They gave us all a calendar
    At work this afternoon.
    Suddenly it dawns on me,
    The year is ending soon!

  20. 18. Holiday Reflections

    • By Linda Murdock
    •  Published by Family Friend Poems November 2010

Hi, I am 62 and married 40 years. We have two children who are grown. I love writing, gardening, traveling, sports, dancing, reading, volunteering, animals, and family and friends.

I am sad about the racism in our country and how people treat each other, and I am worried for the state of our country and where it is headed.

Thanksgiving comes but once a year.
It's a time when families gather near
To reflect and give thanks for those we hold dear.
We celebrate Christmas with parties and food,

  22. 20. End Of Year

    • By Detlin
    •  Published by Family Friend Poems December 2010

This is a poem based around the emotions felt leading up to Christmas and New Year's based on familiar feelings and events with friends and families. Events in your life may change from one year to the next, but essentially things stay the same.

    Daylight, my friend seldom seen
Your absence tells which season's close
Time to reflect on months gone by, but not yet
Christmas nears, no time to think.
