Poems about Christmas for Family and Friends

In today's world we are inundated with images of Christmas from the media. We are told that it is all about buying expensive gifts for each other. In today's challenging economic times it is a tragedy that parents spend way more than they can afford to try to please their children. The sad truth is that, "money can't buy you love". A holiday is about the time spent together with loved ones. It is about gifts that come from the heart, and it is the about the thousands of years of tradition that mark the holiday season.

  1. 1. A Friend's Greeting

    Having a close friend is an incredible blessing. It means having someone who’s always there to listen and encourage. In this famous poem by Edgar Guest (1881-1959), he shares of all the great friendship qualities he’d like to return to someone who has displayed them to him. This poem is made up of octaves (eight-line stanzas). It also has a strong sense of structure since most of the stanzas begin with “I’d like to…”

    I'd like to be the sort of friend
    that you have been to me;
    I'd like to be the help that you've been
    always glad to be;

  3. 2. 'Twas The Night Before Christmas

    Clement Clarke Moore wrote this poem in 1822 for his own children. It is also referenced with the title, "A Visit from St. Nicholas". The poem is the origin for many of the modern notions of Santa Claus, his plump and cheerful white-bearded look, the names of his reindeer, and even the tradition that he brings toys to children.

    'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house
    Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse;
    The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
    In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there;

    • By Mary Butto

    My son always wrote me a poem on my birthday and at Christmas. He wrote this one last year. I pulled it out because he is leaving for college and I will not see him again until next Christmas. I will miss him so....

    For all of the presents
    You put under the tree,
    For all of the times
    You picked up after me...

  6. 4. Christmas In Heaven

    I wrote this poem with my wife in mind who passed away at age 63. I hope dear Santa found his way to heaven.

    Santa, do you know where heaven is?
    Maybe your reindeer know the way.
    For I have a special present
    I need delivered on Christmas day.

  9. 7. At Christmas

    Christmas is a time that seems to bring out the best in humanity, which famous poet Edgar Guest (1881-1959) captures in this poem. Christmas is a time of year that people are quicker to think of others above themselves, and they do not worry about the petty things that consume them throughout the year.

    A man is at his finest
    towards the finish of the year;
    He is almost what he should be
    when the Christmas season is here;

  11. 9. The Littlest Christmas Tree

    Hello everyone. I was raised in Wisconsin among many cold winters and driven to writing by two great, wonderful parents whose imagination left all of their children wide-eyed with excitement during the holidays. I was told by my father that the pines talk when the wind blows....and if you listen...you can hear them. I hope this story will leave your family with an adventure into the woods to hear the pines talking.

    The littlest Christmas tree
    lived in a meadow of green
    among a family
    of tall evergreens.

  14. 12. A Christmas Wish

    If I had one Christmas wish to make, I would not wish for a million dollars. I would love to spend one Christmas day with my family as I did when I was a child, over fifty years ago. To me, Christmas has always been about spending it with family and friends.

    I wish I could go back to the past,
    of Christmases long ago.
    I wish I could see my loved ones
    who have passed on long ago.

  15. 13. Christmas Time

    During the holiday season let's remember to be grateful for the gifts God has bestowed upon us instead of envious of the gifts He has bestowed upon others.

    Christmas time is finally here.
    It only comes but once a year,
    And it's a time to spread good cheer
    To those we love and hold so dear.

  16. 14. O Christmas Tree

    I have a love/hate relationship with our artificial Christmas tree. I didn't fully think it through when I purchased the largest one I could find. In recent years, I have debated whether putting it up is worth the effort, but of course it always is - it just wouldn't be Christmas without it.

    O Christmas tree, O Christmas tree,
    You truly are a beauty.
    I used to love to put you up,
    Now it's a dreaded duty.

  17. 15. Christmas Bells

    Henry Wadsworth Longfellow was inspired to write this poem in 1863 during the Civil War when his son went off to fight for the Union against his wishes. While this song is about Christmas time, there is an underlying tone of the war (The Wrong shall fail, The Right prevail). This poem is the basis for the Christmas carol "I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day."

    I heard the bells on Christmas Day
    Their old, familiar carols play,
    And wild and sweet
    The words repeat

  19. 17. The Holy Night

    Elizabeth Barrett Browning was an English poet who lived from 1806-1861. Her first book of poems was published privately by her father at the age of 14. She was a Christian who taught herself Greek and Hebrew so she could better study the Bible, and this poem has religious roots in the retelling of Christ’s birth.

    We sate among the stalls at Bethlehem;
    The dumb kine from their fodder turning them,
    Softened their horned faces
    To almost human gazes

  20. 18. The Hush Of Christmas

    • By Carl F. Verge
    •  Published by Family Friend Poems December 2019

    As the president of a theological college, each year it was my pleasure to present the personnel with a Christmas honorarium with a personal note attached. One Christmas, instead of the usual note, I composed the following poem. It has never been used since.

    Have you observed this Christmas thing?
    How shoppers shop and sleigh bells ring,
    And children wrapped in muffs and cuffs
    Are trying out their newfound stuff.

    • By Roxanna

    Hello, my name is Roxanna Johnson. I am 17 and currently a sophomore at my high school. I enjoy writing because it defines emotions that may otherwise never be experienced. I am currently published with two other sites and am looking forward to reviews from this amazing site as well. I am so very grateful that so many individuals pursue literature and enjoy its benefits. That is why I choose to write. I write mainly poems, but I have jotted down a few stories.

    Looks to his elves, all busy with work and no play.

  22. 20. The True Christmas Spirit

    • By Ina G. Roberts
    •  Published by Family Friend Poems December 2019

    I was sitting at my computer thinking, "What's wrong with the world?" We are more worried about banning a Christmas song than all of the truly bad things happening in our world. Then these words came to me, so I had to write them down.

    A long time ago, down Bethlehem way,
    A star shown in the night sky as bright as the day.
    The shepherds were watching their flocks with care
    When a host of angels appeared in the air,
