Long Distance Poem

Poem About Loving A Soldier

I wrote this about a year after my husband came home from Afghanistan. I couldn't write or speak about it for a long time. This was the first time I wrote a little about my heartache during that time.

A Soldier

He says he's leaving.
He'll be gone about a year.
He's headed off to fight the war,
And his time is drawing near.

I have no words of wisdom
To ease our aching hearts.
He'll be gone and I'll be here,
A thousand miles apart.

The danger that soldiers face,
He knows it all too well.
Still, he keeps our spirits up,
As our throats begin to swell.

The morning comes all too fast;
I'm not prepared at all,
Because I know there is a chance
My soldier won't come home.

My soldier is a strong man,
One that's brave and true.
He's not afraid of dying.
He fights for me and you.

So if you see a soldier,
Give him lots of praise.
Tell him that you're thankful,
You see the price we pay.

My fiancee is in the Air Force (pilot), currently in Israel. He was supposed to come home in April, after being there a year. But he was offered a promotion last minute. He decided to take it and delay his homecoming by weeks, possibly months. We had been planning for a June wedding. It was so painful canceling everything. I never knew I could be that angry with and hurt by someone and still love them so, so incredibly deeply. He says he's coming home end of July. This will have been the longest 4 months of my life!! Your poem really touched me, almost as much as your intro. I had always thought of military spouses and girlfriends as being "mostly" strong and accepting of their life. It helps to know I'm not alone in this pain of missing my guy so much that it hurts. Thank you for sharing!

I recently met this girl online. She is in Syria fighting the Taliban. A couple of weeks ago her group was attacked and 2 soldiers died from their wounds. Yesterday another group was attacked and 4 soldiers were killed. She is upset, of course, and I'm trying to be there for her. She has had some heartbreak in the past and she wants a future for us together. I pray for her and all our military.

My partner is in Afghanistan in the US army, and I miss him so much. I am from the UK, and I want to thank people for sharing their poems and stories. It makes me feel better. I love my soldier so much; he is fighting for his country, and I’m so proud of him. Even though I want him home, I know and understand what others go through, so thank you.

This touched me deeply. I'm going through this exact situation right now. My fiance is currently deployed in Afghanistan. It is hard right now, especially being that Christmas is a few days away, but even though we are apart, our love grows stronger every day. I just pray every day for his safety and that he comes home safely. He loves what he does, and I could never make him give up something that he loves. I'm very proud of him.

My story is one of my partner being in the army. The distance is hard, him working at the other end of the country and only being able to get home on the odd occasions when he's not away. It's heartbreaking, but we stay as strong as we can, and although we cry and moan, sometimes the time he's home is the most magical. It makes us forget about everything else just for a short while before he has to go back!

True love is like a flower. Its beauty will glow and your feeling will flow, but love is also like the seasons. It can come and go, but there is one thing that I know and I intend to show. I pray every day that God lets a true love come and stay and that you feel the same way too.

I’m also the one every day to have a wish and a prayer. No matter how hard a situation is, I pray it’ll bring us closer together. A hard situation is actually going to test how strong your love is.

My family and I are so grateful for our U.S. military and their families. They have sacrificed so much. We keep all of you in our thoughts and prayers and we can never do enough to honor all of you.
