Relationship Poem

Whenever I See You

When I wrote this poem, I was reeling from a unique heartbreaker. I had loved him silently from afar through a few phases of young life already, and when we finally found each other, it felt like all the stars were aligning. But it was a meteor, practically over before it started, and it took me out. We kept running into each other at bars. With a lot to reconcile, one day when it came "to and through me," I pulled my car to the side of the road and started writing.

Whenever I See You

What does it look like when a heart breaks?
Is it watery eyes driving the interstate?
What does it sound like when the pieces fall away?
Is it rhythm and melody?
Is it wind and rain?
Is it so quiet and slow, no one hears or sees?
Is it breaking a glass?
Is it not you, but me?
Is it the look on your face when I close the car door?
Is it wanting and wishing, and not getting more?
Is it the joke I would've told you if I only could have called?
Is it red wine on the porch as the summer turns to fall?
Is it leaving so soon after things aren't as planned?
Is it lost somewhere between a boy and a man?
Is it knowing what's best but still feeling unsure?
Is it your bare back on the cold tile floor?

It's the ache in your chest that you know all too well
It's the secret you suffer but can't seem to tell
It's my ghost walking 'round the apartment at night
It's a hand on your back saying you'll be alright
Sometimes it's stoic and stone cold and tough
Others it's soft rot, your bones turn to mush
It's the moment you wake and remember it's real
It's birthdays and Christmas and Thanksgiving meals
It's crippling failure
It's locking the doors
It's time by yourself
It's healing what's sore
It's when saying you shouldn't doesn't mean that you won't
It's whenever I see you and whenever I don't
