Pet Friend Poems

Poems About Dog and Cats

The saying goes that "man is dog's best friend". Others find that other pets are also up to the task. The companionship that animals offer is different from human interaction. Human communicate with speech and although this is an advanced form of communication, it has its limitations. Sometimes people struggle to say the right thing when what we really need is to be simply there for each other. Because animals cannot talk they are superior to humans in detecting the feelings of others. A pet may be able to offer a level of companionship that is deeper and more satisfying than human interaction.

  1. 1. The Power Of The Dog

Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936) had a special bond with his dogs. In this poem, he shares that a dog’s loyalty and devotion brings a man much joy, but a dog also has the power to break a man’s heart when its life comes to an end. There is a strong sense of structure with the varying repetition of, “Giving your heart to a dog to tear.”

There is sorrow enough in the natural way
    From men and women to fill our day;
And when we are certain of sorrow in store,
Why do we always arrange for more?

  3. 2. The Ballad Of Rum

A story based on a real dog who still watches over our yard in his own way.

A dog wandered into our garden one day,
A friendly old mutt, didn't look like a stray.
We never discovered whence he had come,
But we brushed him and fed him and the kids called him Rum.

    • By Megan Osburn
    •  Published by Family Friend Poems March 2015

I am a huge pet lover. My 11-year-old Labrador Retriever inspired me to write this poem. He is the best friend anyone could ever ask for. We make every last minute count while we can.

You're the best friend I could ever ask for,
The one I can talk to.
    You listen to everything I have to say;
I'm really going to miss you.

A poem for friendship that lasts through the good and the bad.

  7. 5. Always Love Your Pet, No Matter How Old They Get

    • By Lesley M. Patterson
    •  Published by Family Friend Poems August 2018

I wrote this poem because animals are very special to me. I am an animal advocate. Our family has 4 of our own little fur-babies. my dog (Kali) and 3 cats (The Haunt, Schiz, and Dudette). All of our pets are older (from 5-14 years old) All but the two brother kitties were rescued animals. I have a deep love for my animals, and I wanted to write this poem especially for children because they need to be taught to always be loving and kind to their pets, no matter how old they get.

Pets are people, too, just like me and you.
They need food in their tummies and lots of beefy yummies.

They are little, but their hearts are BIG.

    • By Abby Jenkins
    •  Published by Family Friend Poems March 2011

My poem was written to describe the joy of my best friend. He, of course, is an animal, but sometimes that's best. Animals can't talk, but they listen. I have the greatest joy when I am with him.

    Black and white
    Thick and furry
    Fast as the wind
    Always in a hurry

  9. 7. A Dog Has Died

Anyone who has ever had and lost a pet will be able to relate to this poem by Pablo Neruda (1904-1973). When people pass away, a eulogy is usually shared at the funeral to talk very highly of that person and all that will be remembered. This poem could be considered a form of a eulogy but for a pet. The specific poetic form is called an elegy, which is a poem of reflection that can also show lament for someone who has passed away.

    My dog has died.
I buried him in the garden
next to a rusted old machine.

  10. 8. Lessons From Dogs

My poem was inspired by an article I read in a magazine; featuring a six-year-old boy's explanation why dogs don't live as long as humans. Spoiler alert: It has nothing to do with biology; the real reason might surprise you...

    Have you ever wondered
Why dogs don't live that long?
It's because their souls are true
    And their love is strong.

  11. 9. Are There Paw Prints In Heaven?

I am forever an animal lover, moreso a dog lover. This is a question many times I have heard asked by children, so as I may not be able to answer that question for certain, I did write a poem in hopes that children will enjoy the comfort in the possibility that maybe there will be animals in heaven.

I hear of a place that is made of gold,
a place where we shall never grow old,
but one answer I have not heard at all,
will there be paw prints from my little dog?

  12. 10. It's Just A Dog

    • By Sadie A. Gibbs
    •  Published by Family Friend Poems August 2019

I am 16 and surrounded by ill health. My Mum, Dad and younger sister have different variations of difficulties. I've found things hard for a long time and turn to animals for happiness and support. My first dog whom is now 2 is my best friend and has helped me through so much. This is a short poem I made about her.

    You may be a dog,
    But to me you're more.
You're the light in my fog.

  14. 12. My Puppy Is A Handful

    • By Ann Davies
    •  Published by Family Friend Poems May 2014

I had been suffering with depression for some time, so my children decided it would be a good idea to get me a puppy to cheer me up and help me relax. How naive we all were to think that having a puppy to care for would be relaxing. However, she definitely cheered me up.

    My puppy is a handful,
    So full of energy.
She jumps around to greet us
And wags her tail with glee.

  15. 13. Where Do All The Good Dogs Go?

Do dogs have a soul and do they go to heaven? Many dog owners and lifelong friends would love to imagine their best friend spending eternity in a doggy heaven.

It wasn’t the end of the world when she up and died,
But I admit I had to talk a tear from sloshing over the side.
The crow quit calling her names over his drifting shadow.
Does anyone know where all the good dogs go?

  16. 14. My Doggie And I

My little poodle Ella came into my life a few months ago, when an elderly neighbor told me she had cancer and needed someone to take care of her dog. I offered to help and took Ella in, thinking it was temporary. Two weeks later our neighbor died suddenly in the hospital, and ever since then, Ella is a part of our family. It's amazing really how much friendship and unconditional love dogs give to their humans. I simply can't imagine life without her anymore!

    My doggie makes me happy,
    I love her so much!
    My little furry friend;
    So soft to the touch.

This is just about my cat, who I love very much, and who I can always trust.

    Thump. thump. thump.

  20. 18. For Binky

    • By Raymond Stewart
    •  Published by Family Friend Poems May 2009

Today we had to give our beloved dog up for adoption. We tried every friend and family member, but we just couldn't keep her. It saddened us deeply.

Today we had to let you go.
It broke our hearts in two.
We had to leave you at that place,
    Alone and feeling blue.

  21. 19. Shorty In Peace

    • By Maria Reyes
    •  Published by Family Friend Poems June 2014

My dog, Shorty, died on May 9, 2014. I've had her since I was 4, and I'm 16 now. The veterinarian said her liver was twice the size of a normal one and that her heart was growing. She was going to turn 12 on August 1. She was there for me the day I tried to commit suicide. I love her so much, and I can't accept the idea that she's gone forever, how I won't be able to ever see her anymore. It hurts, but I know she's happy. I understand how people feel when their pet dies. It hurts.

    Slowly and slowly,
    She started to fall.
    Her eyes opened and closed
    As she blinked.

  22. 20. My Best Friend

There have been countless books and movies depicting the relationship between a man and his dog. I personally can attest to how strong that bond can be. This is about one that was half Springer and half Australian Shepherd. He had a black and white marled coat and the prettiest blue eyes you've ever seen. For obvious reasons, he was named after Frank Sinatra. He would steal your heart and your lunch all at the same time. I must admit I had tears in my eyes when I finished this.

His coat was soft and silky, and his eyes were baby blue.
His nose was pink and runny, and his legs were strong and true.
It really was amazing how that pup could steal your heart.
I never would imagine that a dog could be so smart.
