  1. 81. Phenomenal Woman

Maya Angelou is one of the most influential women of our time. Her writing pulls on the hearts of many readers. In addition to her proliferous writing career, Maya Angelou has been a civil rights activist. This poem shows how even though someone is not beautiful on the outside compared to society's standards, there is an inner beauty that makes a woman even more beautiful.

Pretty women wonder where my secret lies.
I'm not cute or built to suit a fashion model's size
But when I start to tell them,
    They think I'm telling lies.
    I say,
It's in the reach of my arms
    The span of my hips,
    The stride of my step,
    The curl of my lips.
    I'm a woman
    Phenomenally.
    Phenomenal woman,
    That's me.

    I walk into a room
Just as cool as you please,
    And to a man,
    The fellows stand or
    Fall down on their knees.
    Then they swarm around me,
    A hive of honey bees.
    I say,
It's the fire in my eyes,
And the flash of my teeth,
    The swing in my waist,
And the joy in my feet.
    I'm a woman
    Phenomenally.
    Phenomenal woman,
    That's me.

    Men themselves have wondered
    What they see in me.
    They try so much
    But they can't touch
    My inner mystery.
When I try to show them
They say they still can't see.
    I say,
It's in the arch of my back,
    The sun of my smile,
    The ride of my breasts,
    The grace of my style.
    I'm a woman

    Phenomenally.
    Phenomenal woman,
    That's me.

    Now you understand
Just why my head's not bowed.
I don't shout or jump about
Or have to talk real loud.
    When you see me passing
It ought to make you proud.
    I say,
It's in the click of my heels,
    The bend of my hair,
    the palm of my hand,
    The need of my care,
    'Cause I'm a woman
    Phenomenally.
    Phenomenal woman,
    That's me.

  2. 82. I Hear America Singing

Walt Whitman was an American poet who lived from 1819-1892. Some of his poetry was controversial because of the nature of its content, but he is believed to be the father of free verse (but he did not invent this form of poetry). He is also seen as a "poet of democracy" because he wrote so strongly about the American character. In this poem, Whitman shows how America is made up of a variety of people. It's the stories of those people who make America the strong and unique nation that it is.

I hear America singing, the varied carols I hear,
Those of mechanics, each one singing his as it should be blithe and strong,
The carpenter singing his as he measures his plank or beam,
The mason singing his as he makes ready for work, or leaves off work,
The boatman singing what belongs to him in his boat, the deckhand singing on the steamboat deck,
The shoemaker singing as he sits on his bench, the hatter singing as he stands,
The wood-cutter's song, the ploughboy's on his way in the morning, or at noon intermission or at sundown,
The delicious singing of the mother, or of the young wife at work, or of the girl sewing or washing,
Each singing what belongs to him or her and to none else,
The day what belongs to the day - at night the party of young fellows, robust, friendly,
Singing with open mouths their strong melodious songs.

  3. 83. Life Is A Rose

    • By Talish
    •  Published by Family Friend Poems July 2011

I wrote this poem because I feel that everyone, including myself, experiences unexpected downfalls in our lives. Just when we think something is going right, suddenly out of nowhere, you experience a loss or a terrible thing that really brings you down. However, people need to understand that there is hope and that there is an entire life waiting for them to be painted with many colors. I want this poem to inspire people to enjoy, accept, and live their lives freely.

Uplifting Poem About The Ups And Downs Of Life

Together, we all live different lives,
Whether we are doctors, students, or parents,
That can still make up a continuous field of roses.
A field of roses, shining yellow, red, white and pink,
Which subtly grow in the midst of time,
And day by day, their heads successfully rise,
Slowly reaching the clear blue sky.

But sometimes we may experience some terrible times,
That perhaps are caused by downfalls from the past,
Each downfall is like a falling petal.
Petal after petal, a person we once loved,
Whether it was a friend or a parent,
    Suddenly leaves our precious hearts,
Which results in a permanent, painful scar.
But as this growing pain slowly enters
And gradually controls every root of our bodies,
We'll discover, in the end, that our shadow still remains.

As our body, our stem still stands alone,
Weak, thirsty, gradually falling into the warm earth's soil.
And just as there were times that put us
In a state of loneliness and despair,
    New lives begin to blossom
As the pollen's internal strength paints them gold.

Life, it is not something of fear nor shame,
But something that will continuously fall and rise.
So, let the lives be remarkable, radiant roses,
Roses that sparkle in the fields forever.

  4. 84. I Am No Longer Afraid

    • By Katelyn Ramsaroop
    •  Published by Family Friend Poems March 2011

This poem is for that special person who has taught me the true meaning of life. He supported me when I was at my weakest. He never failed to make me happy. He taught me how let go of my fears and just live life to the fullest.

I am no longer afraid to fall,
for I know whenever I am about to,
you'll be there to catch me.

In your eyes I see a world of happiness,
for now I am no longer afraid of the world on the outside.

Your arms gives me the comfort of belonging,
for now I am no longer afraid of being alone.

Because of you I am no longer afraid.
You have given me the courage to become who I am today.

Your love shows me that you'll always be by my side.
That is why now I am no longer afraid to love.

  5. 85. Mighty Oak

I wrote this poem many years ago when I was grieving my grandfather's death. He was a published poet and the light of my life. I saw him as that oak tree. He was always so strong, and his faith never wavered. He taught me so much about life and love and family, but most of all about Christian faith. He will be forever missed, but someday I will meet him in heaven, and until then this will always be my tribute to Caleb Fowler, the greatest man I ever knew.

Strong And Inspiring Like A Mighty Tree

Stand tall, oh mighty oak, for all the world to see.
Your strength and undying beauty forever amazes me.
Though storm clouds hover above you,
    Your branches span the sky
In search of the radiant sunlight you
    Count on to survive.
When the winds are high and restless and
You lose a limb or two,
    It only makes you stronger.
We could learn so much from you.
Though generations have come and gone
    And brought about such change,
    Quietly you've watched them all,
    Yet still remained the same.
I only pray God gives to me
    The strength he's given you
To face each day with hope,
Whether skies are black or blue.
Life on earth is truly a gift.
    Every moment we must treasure.
It's the simple things we take for granted
    That become our ultimate pleasures.

  6. 86. Wondering

    • By Miranda
    •  Published by Family Friend Poems July 2009
Encouragement To Live In The Present

Sometimes people go through life wondering what they're here for
or who we are supposed to spend our lives with
or even what we will do when we get older.
I know I ask myself those questions all the time,
but why spend life wondering or asking questions?
Life is too short to live wondering why or what.
You need to live your life,
love with your whole heart and don't hold back,
and laugh until you cry and it hurts to laugh anymore.
Life is here one day and gone the next.
So live like it is your last day to live,
and love like you've never been hurt.

  7. 87. Circle Of Life

I am a student, a learner, a righteous person. I am a poet. I am someone who will sit down on my free time with my own free will and write a poem. When I write, I feel like my whole body is in balance. I am not a person who when disagrees on something will stand up and speak my mind right then and there. What I would do is go home, take out a sheet of paper, and write what I am thinking. Poetry is my refuge, my sacred thing, something no one can take away from me. I am a poet and proud to be one.

Encouragement To See The Good In Life

Life is a carousel, always going forward, never going back.
Existence is a hard thing to keep when you stop trying.
To live a life, you must want to live.
To want to live you must find a way.
When all hope is lost, you must stand tall.
When all others retreat, you must prevail.
You are the conscience inside your head.
    You create your own destiny.
Life is a very hard thing to keep
When your life does not always go the way you plan.
Fight for your life and the right to keep dreaming.
If you feel you were gifted, share your gift.
If you feel you were cursed, fix it.
As you get older, your life becomes a challenge.
    Who are you?
What do you want in life?
    What will you be?
What is your purpose in life?
If you worry, these things will turn into burdens.
But if you hold on to them in the back of your mind,
All of the answers will come in time.
Life is a carousel, always going forward, never going back.
Look to the future, not to the past.

  8. 88. Game Of Life

    • By Sarah White
    •  Published by Family Friend Poems February 2009

I wrote this poem when I had a lot of things going on in my life and I wanted to give myself a positive new start. Really helped!

Encouraging Other To Have A New Start

    Roll the dice,
    Play a new game.
    Life for you
    Will never be the same.

    No looking back,
    No aspect of time,
    You now have
    A new mountain to climb.

    Your body seems to stop
    Whilst the world keeps going.
    With no time to think,
    Time still keeps flowing.

    Going back to the dice
And the game, you will roll
It's time to start a new life
    Complete with heart and soul.

  10. 90. The Strongest Girl I Ever Knew

My sister Kelly was paralyzed when she was 16. For the next 25 years she was totally dependent on others. Even though she got dealt a bad hand, she remained strong and dignified throughout her life. That is why she'll always be "The Strongest Girl I Ever Knew." Kelly, I know you're dancing in Heaven.
In Loving Memory of Kelly Doe

    Inspirational Poem About Disabled Sister

    She never got to dance
Or go to her own prom.
    She never got the chance
To forget where she came from.

    She never got to kiss,
    A man she idolized.
    She never felt love's bliss,
    'Cause she was paralyzed.

    She never got to talk
    About love with a smile.
    She never got to walk
    Down a church's aisle.

    She never got to say
    Those precious words, "I Do."
But she was far and away
The strongest girl I ever knew.

    She couldn't brush her hair
Or put make up on her face.
    She couldn't hold you dear
Or give you a warm embrace.

    She couldn't clasp her hands
As if in the form of prayer.
    She couldn't understand
Why she was in a wheelchair.

    She never showed her fears
Or let you hear her cries.
    She never showed the tears
That fell down from her eyes.

    She never looked for pity
    Or sympathy from you.
    That's why she'll always be
The strongest girl I ever knew.

  11. 91. Today's Walk

I am one that loves to write from my heart.

    Poem Having Hope For Tomorrow

    I will walk slowly through this day;
I leave what is not needed behind from yesterday.
I will treasure all the knowledge to move forward.
What I do today will not change or erase the past..
I move on knowing that today I will do differently than before.
If I fail, there will be another tomorrow and a future tomorrow for hope..

  12. 92. Chasms And Bridges

Ted L Glines has been writing since 1965, with many poems published in college literary magazines and the "underground" free press (Village Voice, etc.).

Inspiring Poem About The Power Of Our Attitude

    Whether dancing the circle
    or sitting in the pews,
the world is full of wonder
    and knee-jerk news.

    For those full of spite
    and woeful complaining,
    the world is full of darkness;
    no hope remaining.

    Diversity spawns,
    attacking spasms,
    elevating hate
    and deepening the chasms.

    You are who you are,
    smart as a fox;
    why confine yourself
    to a bleak little box?

    For those full of love
    and compassion caring,
the world is full of brightness
    and warmth in sharing.

    Diversity spawns
    a chance to build bridges,
    elevating love
    and life privileges.

    You are who you are,
    smart as a fox;
    expressing yourself,
    you're out of that box!

    We can make this world
    a beautiful place
    if we toss away frowns
and put smiles on our face.

    Abolish that burden
    of complaints you've been lugging;
    begin building bridges
    and get used to hugging!

  13. 93. Never Let Go

    • By Sarah
    •  Published by Family Friend Poems December 2008

I wrote the poem as an experience in life. It happened to my friend, and it was very, very hard watching her learn to re-walk.

Influential Poem Of A Father's Love For His Daughter

    One by one.
Take one step at a time,
Said her daddy, teaching her to walk,
The little girl only one year old.
    She looked up and smiled
And let go of his hand.

    Now seventeen years old,
    Out driving in the snow.
Driving too fast, hitting a pole.
    After getting the news,
    Her dad rushes to her.
    Hearing the terrible news:
    She may never walk again.

    One by one, my dear.
Take one step at a time,
    Said her daddy teaching
    Her to walk again.

She looked up with a smile,
As she did sixteen years ago and
Let go of his hand for the last time.

  14. 94. I Will Prevail

My name is Phil Harris. I am 24 years of age and I reside in Georgia. This poem is one of the best out of a book I am writing called "Inspirations in Life." I have been inspired many ways in life to never allow anyone to cause me to remember that I have a dream that I can achieve. I hope to have the whole book completed within the next month.

    Poem Of Determination

I have been told that I will never exceed.
I have been told that I am living in a dream.
I have been pushed to the side by many of my peers.
I have heard of the struggles that were present before me.
I have heard others speak of the struggles they were presented with.
I have accepted I can't change everything in my life.
I know the things that can be changed will take time.
I have watched many come and fall.
I have seen those who have raised to riches fall to pennies.
    I have started a goal.
I have told myself that I will prevail.

I have seen the evil in life.
I have once been a victim to this life.
I have learned that the only thing that can hold you back in life is living for the past.
I refuse to give up without a try.
I refuse to let anyone tell me that I can't reach the sky.
I refuse to live for today.
I will always prepare for tomorrow, even though it is not guaranteed.
I will refuse to allow anyone to change my heart.
I believe that God will lead me to a higher place.
I believe that change has been accepted for my life.
I believe that someone is watching over me.
    I will prevail.

I apologize for the struggles others may have faced.
I refuse to allow myself wait.
I know that many have never received an apology for the struggles they have faced.
I hope that you accept this from me as I am speaking through them to you.
I know that for many of you this is the reason
You have given in to the belief that you can't exceed.
I will continue through the obstacles that step in my way.
I will ask for guidance every day.
    I will not give up.
    I will not give in.
    I will not look back.
I will not expect that this is all my life is meant to be.
    I will continue.
    I will prevail.

    • By Livelovelaugh
    •  Published by Family Friend Poems October 2008

My beliefs in life, because not everyone realizes just how precious it really is.

    Uplifting Poem Filled With Advice

    Life is crazy
    And totally unpredictable...
It's going to push you over,
    Kick you while you're down,
And hit you when you try to get back up.
    Not everything can beat you.
Things are going to change you,
But you get to choose which ones you let change you.
    Listen to your heart,
    Follow your dreams,
And let no one tell you what you're capable of.
    Push the limits,
    Bend the rules,
And enjoy every minute of it.
    Laugh at everything.
Live for as long as you can.
    Love all,
    But trust none.
    Believe in yourself,
And never lose faith in others.
Settle for nothing but only the best,
And give 110% in everything you do.
    Take risks,
    Live on the edge,
    Yet stay safe,
And cherish every moment of it.
    Life is a gift.
    Appreciate all the rewards,
    And jump on every opportunity.
Not everyone's going to love you,
    But who needs them anyway?
    Challenge everything,
And fight for what you believe.
    Back down to nothing,
But give in to the little things in life,
After all, that is what makes you.
    Forget the unnecessary,
    But remember everything.
Bring it with you everywhere you go.
    Learn something new,
    And appreciate criticism.
    Hate nothing,
    But dislike what you want.
Never forget where you came from,
And always remember where you are going.
    Live life to its fullest,
And have a reason for everything,
    Even if it's totally insane.
    Find your purpose in life,
    And live it!

  17. 97. Dear Addiction

I wrote this poem in a very short time while I was in a treatment center for addiction. I know addiction is a very big problem for people in this world, and hopefully this can be an inspiration for someone struggling with this disease the way I have. Since writing this, I am doing a lot better, but it is a daily battle trying to get my life back in order. The only words of advice I have is just take it one day at a time. Thank you for reading.

    Inspiring Change For Addicts

    I'm writing this to you,
    Telling you we're through.
    I can't take you anymore,
Don't know what I liked you for.
All you did was wear me out.
Now I know what you're all about.

You came to me with promise and joy,
Now look at all the things you destroy.
Families, lives, bank accounts, you see.
You ruined it all with one little tease.
Look at the way you make me feel
Then you take it all and want me to steal.

Why can't you just go and hide
Somewhere far away where I'll never find?
    Everyone at home doesn't understand
How you rip me apart then lend me a hand.
I keep coming back thinking inside
Maybe this time I'll make you my bride.

Then I sit and wonder why,
Why do you really want me to die?
Thousands and thousands come to you
Hoping and praying you'll help them through.
Then they fall for your lending hand,
Only to realize you're nothing but a scam.

You promised me heaven and sent me to hell.
You ruined my life and then wished me well.
Watch me now as I go on my way.
I'm washing myself of all your pain.
So you and your power can just leave me be.
I'm taking my life and setting it free.

  18. 98. Today I Am Afraid

I wrote this one day just to get some fears of the unknown out. It inspired and reminded me not to worry about what tomorrow brings because it only comes one minute at a time.

    Overcoming Fear Of The Unknown

    Today I felt lost.
    I couldn't find Your hand.
    I felt so alone,
    I just don't understand.

    Today I am afraid,
    For tomorrow's troubles may bring

I may not last; I'll continue to pray.

Why do I worry about tomorrow?
    Today brings enough fear;
    For today was the tomorrow
    That seemed all too near.

    Today I am afraid,
    For tomorrow's troubles may bring
    More pain than today
I may not last; I'll continue to pray.

I'll never forget about the past.
My pain will never let me.
Tomorrow is how long it will last.
By then I may be free.

You'll find who you are looking for.

Hope For Finding The Right Person

We wait for what we long for.
We long for what we need.
    Impatience and anxiety
    Give root to errant deed,
Which grows to yield but heartache,
    The fruit that poisons trust,
And so to shadow we recede
    And hope descends to dust.
    But somehow from the ashes
    The will to try again
    Doth mend the heart
    And forge the path
In search of that one friend
    Who never will betray us,
    Who never will go astray.
But fear still lurks upon the thought
    While waiting for that day.
    We'll simply stumble once again,
For we know not who to trust,
    Thus thoughts becomes an enemy,
    But conquer them we must.
    For surely there is someone
    Whether "Shining Knight" or "Bride."
Then all shall have been worth it,
    Our "Last Hope" justified.
