Poems about Sports

Sports are complex in that they are a way to escape our lives as well as a way to look at our lives in a clearer way. In the world of sports the line of victory and defeat is quite clear. There is no question of what team you are on or what position you play within the team. These things are not always clear in real life. Escaping to the world of sports is an opportunity to think about these questions in our own lives.

  1. 1. Casey At The Bat

Ernest Lawrence Thayer worked for a newspaper, and "Casey at the Bat" was written as part of his column in 1888. It did not gain a lot of attention at first. DeWolf Hooper, a comic actor, recited "Casey at the Bat" 15,000 times over the next 50 year, increasing its popularity. This is the most famous baseball poem that has been written.
"Love has its sonnets galore. War has its epics in heroic verse. Tragedy its sombre story in measured lines. Baseball has Casey at the Bat." - Albert Spalding

    The outlook wasn't brilliant for the Mudville nine that day;
The score stood four to two, with but one inning more to play,
And then when Cooney died at first, and Barrows did the same,
A pall-like silence fell upon the patrons of the game.

  3. 2. Alive

There are a few things I do to clear my head or relieve stress, and running is one of them. The last time I went out for a run in the neighborhood, I remember thinking, "Wow, I feel so alive." That thought inspired me, and I decided to express that emotion through poetry. Hope you enjoy!

When my thoughts are too heavy,
    My feelings too numb,
    When my heart is unsteady,
And the tears start to come,

I am a simple man in my mid 50s who in the last 5 years began to write poetry. I am working on my personal book named "Poems of a Simple Man." I am an avid long-distance motorcycle rider who has ridden in 48 states and seen a lot of America. This inspires some of my writing as well as regular life events.

    • By Erin
    •  Published by Family Friend Poems April 2009

This is a poem about my love for running. How it's the most dependable thing I've got. Friends may come and go, but running will always be a part of me.

My feet stick the black rubber
It's like some kind of magnetic tape
Day after day, it pulls me back
For not only does my body demand it,

  10. 8. Not In Vain

    • By Luis Limon
    •  Published by Family Friend Poems November 2008

I wrote this poem in my English II class while my teacher talked about Vladimir Nabokov's Lolita. I wrote this poem because I wanted to capture moments in a sport that many call soccer but for me is 'football.' I wanted to capture that moment of inspiration, I talk..dream..and play soccer every day, so for me this means a lot. This poem is dedicated to all of those who dream of one day making it big. To all of those that do it for the good of the game.
This poem is based on the very famous poem "If" by Rudyard Kipling

If you can get an equalizer with 10 men,
If you can take the shot and forget your pain,
not all you went through was in vain,
If you can use the ground to your advantage in the hard rain,

  11. 9. The Road To Victory

    • By Ipshita Chakraborty
    •  Published by Family Friend Poems August 2011

Cricket is more than just a sport in India--it is a thread that unites a country of otherwise different states, customs, and languages. The World Cup 2011 victory is a symbol, not only of our achievement but also of our celebration of the game that is played in every nook and alley in India. This is for every person who has felt a passion for the game, from the passive watchers to the active players.

  18. 16. Hockey

    • By Erica
    •  Published by Family Friend Poems November 2017

I am a teenager who has been secretly writing poetry since I was in fourth grade. I never told anyone about my poetry because most of the things I wrote about were very private. This is the first poem I have ever shown anyone. I am new at being a teenager, and I am on the journey to discovering myself. My dad took me to one NHL game, and from the moment it started I knew this is what I was born to do, so I wrote this poem to express that emotion. I love hockey, and I hope you love my poem.

From the very first moment I saw them all,
I knew that this was who I wanted to be.
With my eyes wide open, looking around,
"Does everyone else see what I see?"

  19. 17. Tribute To Dale Earnhardt Sr.

I was in the Air Force and deployed to the Middle East the day Dale Earnhardt crashed. We were lucky enough to have a TV to see the race. Later that night, I sat in my bunk and wrote this for him.

I have built this machine with bleeding hands.
I have shaped it to slice the wind.
I have shined it with polish and sweat.
I have balanced it with feel

  20. 18. What Was Going Through Your Mind?

    • By Dj Tanner
    •  Published by Family Friend Poems September 2008

I'm DJ Tanner, and I play football. It's what I do. Most guys on my team wouldn't even consider writing a poem in their spare time, but this morning our coach gave a speech that really said something to me. So I decided to write, and this is what I came up with.

What's going through your mind when you're running up the side, only 1 man to beat?
When he runs fast you'll run faster, can he take the heat?
What's going through your mind when the X is open for the 40 yard touchdown pass?
He catches the ball, and you hope this moment will always last.
