Wife Death Poem

My Late Wife Who Died At 39

I wrote this poem 2 months after my wife died from brain cancer at the age of 39. It reflects the changing identity post a spousal loss, moving from two lives inextricably linked together to only one continuing.

From 'We' To 'I', From 'Our' To 'My'

Since you've been gone
'We' has become 'I'
Where I used to say 'our'
I only have 'my'

You said we would grow old
Now you're forever young
We used to be two
Now I'm only one

One dinner at the table
One parent for the kids
One name on the lease
One life left to live

You're gone but I'm here
You've left and I've stayed
You're dead and I survive
Living the life we made

How I wish I could go back
To 'we', to 'two', to 'our'
To have you here with me
For even only an hour

But 'we' is gone
And 'I' remain
Lost without you
In grief. In pain.

But I am not just one
'We' created one more
And then two others
Once five, we are now four

And that is your gift.
It is why we must go on
Through the pain, the sadness, the loss
Remembering you. Our one.
