Depression Poem

A Family Coping With Depression

My mother had never shown a hint of depression until a number of triggers, including a death in the family, led to a severe depressive episode. Out of the blue it was a massive struggle for the family to get our head around and help Mum through the illness. She is now out on the other side, thankfully. I wrote this poem at the time to try to understand what was happening, and I'd like to share it in case anyone else is in a similar situation. My father was brilliant throughout the experience.

Lost - a mother depended on for everything
Found - a father who helped make us more decisive

Lost - a mother quick witted and kind
Found - a father with humor that brightened the darkest hours

Lost - a mother whose strength and patience guided us
Found - a father who learned what real patience is

Lost - a mother with organization and forward planning
Found - a father who had to focus on the here and now

Lost - a mother we are all lost without
Found - a father who provides hope our mother will be found

I almost lost a friend to suicide, but the doctors saved him. It was basically an attempt. He lives in North Carolina, but I couldn't just walk to North Carolina because I live in West Virginia. He is a good guy, but depression won then lost. He could always talk to me instead of ending it. If you think of suicide, tell someone or call the suicide hotline.
