Being or feeling alone is one of the saddest places to be. You can have all the money in the world but if you don't have anyone to share it with, you have nothing. The need for human companionship is universal. In ancient times, people stuck together because they literally needed each other to survive. In today's world, we tend to spread out and live more isolated lifestyles. In some ways this is a luxury. In other ways we had it better when we lived in close proximity. Humans are creatures of community and need each other for companionship.

I am tired of the lies. Sick of wiping tears from my eyes. I guess I just wish they could see how damaged I am inside. Instead, I hide it all away, saving it for me. I'm afraid they will all leave me if I let it free.

When I was sad and depressed,
I needed you to be cheer me up.
Instead, I drank till I was numb enough not to feel anything.

When everyone was attacking me and putting me down, making me feel so low,
I needed you to be the one to defend me and be on my side.
Instead, I endured all the cruel words and criticism the world threw at me.

When I lost all my friends and had no one,
I needed you to be that only friend I had left.
Instead, I experienced what the word "friendless" really meant.

When I was scared and frightened,
I needed you to be my security blanket.
Instead, I had to live in fear.

When I was angry and full of rage,
I needed you to calm me down.
Instead, I kept it all bottled up inside.

When I felt so lonely and needed someone to care,
I needed you to hold me tight and never let me go.

Feeling Lost In This World

In this life
I once felt hope.
I sometimes still believe in this,
but each moment a little less.

In this life
I once felt hope.
I sometimes still believe in this,

I feel abandoned in my despair,
and it's difficult to repair.
I get broken each day some more,
keeping these emotions in my core.
I find myself hiding behind this smile,
the one that shows my denial.
I have thoughts of lonesomeness,
which no person should possess.
I camouflage this so well;
it feels like I'm in hell.
I hurt on the inside,
trying to push these demons aside.
I want something better,
to not feel all this terror.
I know it can be manageable;
there are things that make life tolerable.
I just cannot find the thrill,
like when I was a child with a one dollar bill.
I remember when dreams were imaginable,
now it feels like I'm undoubtedly fallible.
I wish to find myself soon.
This feels as if I'm trapped in a cocoon.
I would like to hatch,
not be so detached.
I need to end this coldness,
before death leaves me soulless.

I was once sad and lonely,
Having nobody to comfort me,
So I wore a mask that always smiled,
To hide my feelings behind a lie.

Before long, I had many friends;
With my mask, I was one of them.
But deep inside I still felt empty,
Like I was missing a part of me.

Nobody could hear my cries at night,
For I designed my mask to hide the lies.
Nobody could see the pain I was feeling,
For I designed my mask to be laughing.

Behind all the smiles were the tears,
And behind all the comfort were the fears.
Everything you think you see
Wasn't everything there was to me.

Day by day
I was slowly dying.
I couldn't go on,
There was something missing..

Until now I'm still searching
For the thing that'll stop my crying,
For someone who'll erase my fears,

Have you ever felt like you're alone? Like nobody notices you? All of your pain and suffering just passes people's eyes without a second glance? Do you know how it feels to be ignored? Or to feel unwanted? Sadly, many do, including myself. This is my plea, not only for me, but for anybody and everybody feeling the way that I do. Mothers, brothers, sisters, and fathers. What you want to see,
Letting other things pass you blindly.

Ignoring the rest
Without thinking.

So how can you say
You know it's not true,
When so many things
Never get through?

But what if I somehow
Made you pay attention,
Told you all of the things you never heard?

Made you stop
And listen?

If I told you of all those times
I silently cried at night,

That painfully resides inside?

Would it reach your ears?
Would you really care?

Each day the performance you put on for people is Emmy award winning,
But you question yourself and wonder if your act is just a way for you to hold off your own internal sinnings.
When you wake up from a night's sleep,
You wonder to yourself if today is the day your heart will be back to its old self or will it still be skipping every other beat.
You wonder if things that once made you happy to be alive will make a comeback.
You wonder if the little things in life that made you who you are will have you once again dreaming to the stars.
You wonder if you will feel less empty-hearted.
You wonder to yourself who holds the match to start that fire.
You're tired of running and losing your breath.
You want to hold tight to something that will help you once again enjoy the journey into life's amazing treks.

I'm fourteen years old, and just got into poetry recently, a few months ago. I've always felt alone and scared, but now, I feel more alone, because my friend passed away. I've felt more alone and scared than ever since the tumor took his life, and I just thought of this poem. So really, this is how it feels-- the torture of being alone and scared. where good is always in vain.

16. Be Silent With Me

This poem was inspired by feelings running through my mind when I came home from Iraq. My father passed away two months after I returned home, and I was going through a divorce. I was feeling as if I was losing everything and that my life was possibly also going to be cut short. I sometimes feel like I will be alone when I die, without friends or family. Just me being led out of this life by my father.

I think of all my friends and family that are long since dead.

I listen to the wind blow through the trees, on my face I can feel the warm summer breeze.

My breath deepens and my heart slows as I fall to my knees.

I hear their voices loud, I hear their voices clear.
I can see their faces through every tear.

Be silent with me.

I realize I am alone and there is no one with me.
Is this, I wonder, how my whole life will be?

I have people I call friends; but how many will be there till the end?
When death comes knocking at my door, will there be someone there I can call my friend?

I can feel the blood flowing through my veins.
I can hear a loud thunder in my head accompanying sharp pains.

Be silent with me.

Where am I? There is nothing here I recognize.
Trees begin to blend with bushes, I cannot trust my eyes.

I am feeling a sense of loneliness like never before.
I wish I had someone to talk to, as I clutch the forest floor.

I find myself wanting to tell someone of all the things I feel.
How the only thing I ever wanted was a friend that was real.

I never thought it was too much to ask for, someone to treat me the way I treat them.
So many people have a warped understanding of the meaning of friend.

I can hear the sweat pour from every pore of my being.
I can hear everything, even the most distant birds singing.

Be silent with me.

I feel my thoughts slow as if I were on the edge of sleep.
I struggle to make sense of these feelings that are running so deep.

I roll onto my back and look up at the sky.
Today I think, is a beautiful day to die.

A random thought I cannot explain.
Is it I wonder, because I feel no more pain?

I no longer hear the faint sound of my heart beat.
Then I hear the sound of my father's voice saying, come, be silent with me!

Unseen, unheard, my voiceless cries
I tell you I'm fine through honeyed lies
You smile and nod, just what you wanted to hear
You don't really care, that much is clear

Unwanted, unloved, the voices whisper to me
I'm breaking and drowning, but you don't see
You just smile absently and turn away
Leaving me drifting another day

Unhappy, unpleasant, my life has become
Will somebody save me before the damage is done?
Someone to guide me into the light
Someone to help me win the fight

Unending, unbearable, these thoughts and fears
I number my breaths as I shed silent tears
I pray and I beg that you'll glance up at me
Notice the darkness, finally see

Unfeeling, uncaring, I can't take anymore
You don't even register that I head for the door
I walk and walk, no destination in mind
Seeking only to leave you far behind

Unthinking, unseeing, the world passing by
I hold myself as I softly cry
Someone sits down beside me, wipes away my tears
"I see you, I hear you, I had the same fears"

Unsteady, unsure, I begin to smile
This feeling, this stirring, it's been a while
Someone has come to pick up the fight
The voices lessen, I'll be all right

Everyone needs people beside them through the journey of life. It's not meant to be something to do alone. Even the richest people who are able to buy whatever they need still need people to walk along with them, or they will begin to feel lonely. No amount of money is able to buy the support and care of others. We learn from this poem by Maya Angelou how important it is to develop strong relationships.
