Beside My Mother's Bed

Beside her bed
I hold my mother's hand
Look deeply at her face and see her splendor
To touch her skin
As soft as gentle rain
And in this quiet moment I remember

Although she sleeps
As softly as a child
Time has found its rest upon her eyes
Her years of life
Etched deeply in her breath
And yet I see a youth that time defies

How curious this
That all the fear I felt
And every imposition has erased
For when I sit
Beside my mother's bed
It's only peace I see upon her face

And as I long
To reach back in the past
And piece our lives together through the years
What reaches out
Are simple lovely times
And somehow I've forgiven all the tears

This gracious eve
I whisper to my heart
Was I gentle - did I care enough
And though her eyes
Seem lost inside her soul
They answer that she's always felt my love

This woman here
Lay lightly on this earth
I feel her spirit reaching to the light
My silent prayers
Rest sleeping in my thoughts
Have found their way into my words this night

A tender touch
I pull her blankets close
Adjust the pillows cradling her head
I take her hand
A pure and sacred time
To sit with her - beside my mother's bed

Yes, I too sat by my Mother's bed as she died. It was therefore very moving to read your poem. You paint a very clear picture.

Very best wishes,
Ann
