Loss of Father Poem

Poem Remembering Father's Birthday

I wrote this poem for my father. Every year for his birthday and the anniversary of his death I write a poem. It's my way of feeling close to him. I lost him when he was a young 54. The hardest part of it all was explaining it to my daughter, who was always very close to him.

Happy Birthday Up Above

Looking at the calendar,
Today brings a tear to my eye,
Along with all this pain inside
That I am not ready to let resign.

You always liked your birthday,
You were like a kid inside.
Now we celebrate with root beer
To help keep your memory alive.

I really, really miss you.
Skyla does as well.
She always talks about you;
I'm glad she has stories to tell.

I know you're with Uncle Ronnie.
I know you guys too well.
You're probably stirring up all kinds of trouble,
And giving your dad lots of hell.

So on this day that I miss you,
I also want to wish
A Happy Birthday to you,
With lots of love just for you.
Happy Birthday, Dad!
