Real Love

Real Love

With blue eyes wide,
Hanna watched me crying
after you
broke my heart.

I probably scared her,
carrying on like that.

She didn't say a word.
She couldn't see a boo-boo.
She just ran away.

How could she know what to do?

She was only two.

But she came back.
Her favorite friend
clutched tight.
Elmo handed over
to me
with all her care
and a hug.

My heart pieced back together.
And it held better than
it would with
Elmer's Glue.

To give up Elmo
when someone's hurting-
that's real love

when you are two

or twenty-five.
