Famous Nature Poem

Georgia Douglas Johnson’s Peace is a calming poem about finding comfort and emotional healing through nature. Johnson shows how stepping away from the noise and pressure of human life allows the speaker to experience true inner peace and escape personal struggles. She uses vivid imagery such as “blossoms fair,” “fragrant dreams,” and the “lullaby of streams” to create a soothing natural setting that appeals to the senses. Through personification, nature is given nurturing qualities, as the wood seems to call to the speaker and the streams sing a lullaby. The poem also uses symbolism, with the forest representing safety, healing, and freedom from emotional burdens. The overall message is that nature has the power to calm the mind, ease inner turmoil, and provide a place of rest and renewal.

Famous Poem

Peace

By more Georgia Douglas Johnson

I rest me deep within the wood,
    Drawn by its silent call,
Far from the throbbing crowd of men
    On nature's breast I fall.

My couch is sweet with blossoms fair,
    A bed of fragrant dreams,
And soft upon my ear there falls
    The lullaby of streams.

The tumult of my heart is stilled,
    Within this sheltered spot,
Deep in the bosom of the wood,
    Forgetting, and—forgot!
