  1. A Few More Steps

    • By Kayla White

I self-harmed for a long time, and I contemplated suicide. I'm making progress; it's almost been a year since I last cut. I just want to let people know that it really does get better. You can do it.

    You're almost there.
    Just a few more steps.
    You can beat this game,
    a lot like chess.

  2. The Life Of A Soldier

    • By Jodi M. Kucera
    • Published by Family Friend Poems May 2018 with permission of the Author.

I wrote this poem for my dad in 2015. He's a Vietnam veteran. I found out that May is Military Appreciation Month, so I sent him a text every day thanking him for something in regards to his service. This was the text on day 15. My dad has since passed away, but I still find myself longing to tell him "thank you" once last time.

    in War Poems

We have an understanding, you and I.
We sit in silence; nothing needs to be said.

I know the weight you carry.

  4. I Am Just A Girl Who Misses Her Sister

    • By Lilly Vsqz
    • Published by Family Friend Poems March 2014 with permission of the Author.

My sister passed a way 11 years ago to cancer, and even though I miss her so much, I know someday I will see her again. Yes, I do cry for her sometimes...but I also celebrate and laugh more often for when she was alive. She was so funny!!!

    in Sister Death Poems

I am just a girl who misses her sister.
I wonder if she's missing me too.
I hear the wind when everything else is silent.
I see the horizon when I stare straight ahead.

  5. Love Takes A Little More

    • By Avi Fleischer
    • Published by Family Friend Poems May 2018 with permission of the Author.

This is the first poem that I wrote (back in 1996). It's for those people that have difficulty showing their feelings and therefore have a hard time allowing themselves to love and be loved.

    in Relationship Poems

You supply the lips and I'll supply the kiss,
You supply the chance and I'll supply the bliss.
You supply the truth and I'll supply the trust,
You supply the time and I'll supply the lust.

  7. One Art

    Famous Poem

Possibly her most famous poem, Elizabeth Bishop's,"One Art" is a villanelle, a 6 stanza poem that consists of five tercets (3 line stanzas), and one concluding quatrain (4 line stanza). For more about this challenging poetry form see How To Write a Villanelle.
This poem is about loss and starts off light with a touch of humor, but loss is certainly not a humorous topic and as the stanzas go on the losses mount. Losing our most precious possessions, our friends and loved ones is a most difficult burden. Bishop lost both her parents as a child. Her father died when she was an infant and her mother was committed to an Insane Asylum when she was five. She never saw her mother again and grew up in the homes of various relatives.

    in Famous Sad Poems

    The art of losing isn’t hard to master;
so many things seem filled with the intent
to be lost that their loss is no disaster.

  8. Cool It Down

Our egos can get the best of us sometimes as human beings. But humility is wisdom, and I constantly ask God for this grace. We all should.

    in Life Lesson Poems

    You're not so important
    That you can't be replaced.
    If you leave today,
    Someone will fill your space;

  10. Spring

    • By Camille Gotera
    • Published by Family Friend Poems December 2013 with permission of the Author.

The reason I wrote this poem was because I absolutely hate winter and love spring time. This is mostly because everything is dead in the winter- there's no life. And I'm a very sensitive person, so just the atmosphere of winter makes me sad. Another reason is because I had been through a bad experience- relationship wise- over the winter, and I feel that spring time is a clean new start. No more depressing poems and songs! :)

    in Spring Poems

    Analysis of Form and Technique

When the cold, harsh winter has given its last breath,
When the sky above shows life instead of death,
When the claws reaching to the frozen sky become decorated with leaves,
When the animals -long in hiding- scurry from trees,
