What is love? In Hebrew, the language of the Bible, the word for love is ahava which shares the same root as hav to give. The effort that mothers put in to parenting their children causes wellsprings of love to spring forth from their hearts. The more we give to our children, the more love we will feel for them. We would do well to remember that all loving relationships whether platonic, romantic, or with family members must have giving at its center for the relationship to flourish.

When we are small, our mothers are everything to us. Her arms were made to cradle us and provide for all our needs. At first, we don’t want to be separated from her. As time passes, a mother helps us become more independent. Even in our teenage years, we still love our mother even though we don’t show it well, and we finally come to realize the wisdom she has. This is a great Mother’s Day poem that thanks her for her guidance and unconditional love. No matter our stage of life, whether an infant, young child, teenager, or adult, our mother’s love for us is unconditional.

When I wrote this poem, I was thinking about all the mothers, me being a mother, my daughters being a mother, and our mothers being mothers. Whether we bear a child or not, we still end up being a mother to someone, and we each have a mother somewhere. With fear, reluctance, and a racing heart, a mother raises her child to soon be released to a dangerous and unpredicted society, and with God we gain faith and encouragement for them. So this poem is for all our mothers.

My mom raised my sister and me virtually on her own because my father was rarely there to help. We lost my sister and her two children back in 2004, and neither my mom nor I have ever been the same. Losing a sister, niece and nephew was devastating, but I cannot imagine losing a daughter and two grandchildren. Now I'm all that she has. She has been there for me through good times and the bad. I can't thank her enough, so this poem is dedicated to my mother, Stella. I love you, Ma.

Because you are my mom, you loved me before I was ever seen.
You thanked God for this miracle, this little human being.
So exciting, yet fragile it all must have seemed to you then.
Hearing my little heart beat inside you, now life begins.

Because you are my mom, no pain was too great for you to bear.
Now you're a mother and I your child with joys and pains to share.
And so into this world my life began, each breath now on my own.
One day we will look back at just how much I've grown.

Because you are my mom, you worried for me within your every bone.
You finally let go of my little hand to take my first steps on my own.
Because you are my mom, you showed me through the years
To care about others and their feelings and the things they hold dear.

Because you are my mom, you taught me right from wrong,
Understanding that my faith in God will forever keep me strong,
Showing me that being my own person is the only tool I'll need
When morals and values are your foundation to succeed.

Because you are my mom, you loved me enough to also be my friend.
You would be right there in ways that no one could see or ever comprehend.
When there was no way I thought you could ever understand,
There you would be, non-judging and willing to lend a hand.

Because you are my mom, God's gift to me was you
As your daughter, I will always love you
And promise to be true.
I thank you for so many things, and will try to never make you sad or blue.

I have written my first poem at the age of 11. It's a deep and meaningful poem about a mother.

An attempt to celebrate and honor motherhood and the role they play in all our lives.

This poem is about giving my mum the credit that she deserves. I've put her through hell in the past, and we haven't always seen eye to eye, but I wouldn't change a thing, as it has made us the best of friends. I can't ever imagine my life without her. Love you, Mum! This one's for you.
