But there are lessons taught down there,
I want this child to learn.
I've looked the wide world over,
In search for teachers true.
And from the throngs that crowd life's lanes,
I have selected you.
Now will you give him all your love,
Nor think the labour vain.
Nor hate me when I come
To take him home again?
I fancied that I heard them say,
'Dear Lord, Thy will be done!'
For all the joys Thy child shall bring,
The risk of grief we'll run.
We'll shelter him with tenderness,
We'll love him while we may,
And for the happiness we've known,
Forever grateful stay.
But should the angels call for him,
Much sooner than we've planned.
We'll brave the bitter grief that comes,
And try to understand.

From this deep sorrow - from this painful grief?
How can I go on or find a way to be strong?
Will I ever again enjoy life's sweet song?

Sometimes a warm memory sheds light in the dark
And eases the pain like the song of a Meadow Lark.
Then it flits away on silent wings and I'm alone;
Hungering for more of the light it had shone.

Shall grief's bitter cold sadness consume me,
Like a winter storm on the vast angry sea?
How can I fill the void and deep desperate need
To replant my heart with hope's lovely seed?

Then I look at a photo of your playful smiling face
And for a moment I escape to a serene happy place;
Remembering the laughter and all you would do,
Cherishing the honest, caring, loving spirit of you.

Shall spring's cheerful flowers bring life anew
And allow me to forget the agony of missing you?
Will spring's burst of new life bring fresh hope
And teach my grieving soul how to cope?

Sometimes I'll read a treasured card you had given me
And each word's special meaning makes me see,
The precious gift of love I was fortunate to receive,
And I realize you'd never want to see me grieve.

Shall summer's warm brilliant sun bring new light,
And free my anguished mind of its terrible plight?
Will its gentle breezes chase grief's dark clouds away,
And show me a clear path towards a better day?

When I visit the grave where you lie in eternal peace,
I know that death and heaven brought you release;
I try to envision your joy on that shore across the sea,
And, until I join you, that'll have to be enough for me.

For all the remaining seasons of my life on earth,
There'll be days I'll miss your merriment and mirth,
And sometimes I'll sadly long for all the yesterdays;
Missing our chats and your gentle understanding ways.

Yet, the lessons of kindness and love you taught me,
And the good things in life you've helped me to see;
Linger as lasting gifts that comfort and will sustain,
Until I journey to that peaceful shore and see you again.

Imagine if I was given one moment,
just a single slice of my past.
I could hold it close forever,
and that moment would always last.

Imagine if I was given one moment,

I'd put the moment in a safe,
within my heart's abode.
I could open it when I wanted,
and only I would know the code.

I could choose a time of laughing,
a time of happiness and fun.
I could choose a time that tried me
through everything I've done.

I sat and thought about what moment
would always make me smile.
One that would always push me
to walk that extra mile.

If I'm feeling sad and low,
if I'm struggling with what to do,
I can go and open my little safe
and watch my moment through.

There are moments I can think of
that would lift my spirits every time.
The moments when you picked me up,
when the road was hard to climb.

For me to only pick one moment
to cherish, save and keep
is proving really difficult,
as I've gathered up a heap!

I've dug deep inside my heart,
found the safe and looked inside.
There was room for lots of moments;
in fact, hundreds if I tried.

I'm building my own little library,
embedded in my heart,
for all the moments spent with you
before you had to part.

I can open it up whenever I like,
pick a moment and watch it through.
My little library acts as a promise;
I'll never ever forget you.

Surviving The Unsurvivable: Journey Through Grief Poem

If we are fortunate,
we are given a warning.

If not,

If we are fortunate,
we are given a warning.

If not,
there is only the sudden horror,
the wrench of being torn apart;
of being reminded
that nothing is permanent,
not even the ones we love,
the ones our lives revolve around.

Life is a fragile affair.
We are all dancing
on the edge of a precipice,
a dizzying cliff so high
we can't see the bottom.

One by one,
we lose those we love most
into the dark ravine.

So we must cherish them
without reservation.
Now.
Today.
This minute.
We will lose them
or they will lose us
someday.
This is certain.
There is no time for bickering.
And their loss
will leave a great pit in our hearts;
a pit we struggle to avoid
during the day
and fall into at night.

Some,
unable to accept this loss,
unable to determine
the worth of life without them,
jump into that black pit
spiritually or physically,
hoping to find them there.

And some survive
the shock,
the denial,
the horror,
the bargaining,
the barren, empty aching,
the unanswered prayers,
the sleepless nights
when their breath is crushed
under the weight of silence
and all that it means.

Somehow, some survive all that and,
like a flower opening after a storm,
they slowly begin to remember
the one they lost
in a different way...

The laughter,
the irrepressible spirit,
the generous heart,
the way their smile made them feel,
the encouragement they gave
even as their own dreams were dying.

And in time, they fill the pit
with other memories
the only memories that really matter.

We will still cry.
We will always cry.
But with loving reflection
more than hopeless longing.

And that is how we survive.
That is how the story should end.
That is how they would want it to be.

I see your smiling eyes
Each morning when I wake.
I talk to you and place a kiss

How much I miss you being here,

I put on this front as I don't want the world to see
the pain and sorrow so deep inside me.

I don't act this way 'cause I'm ashamed to feel the way I do.
I act this way in honour of you,
because although I hurt right now and my heart is broken,
I can't help but feel pride and love when your name is spoken.
My strength comes from the love you gave to me,
and it's that strength I want the world to see.

I will always love and miss you;
that I will never hide,
and when people ask me about my daughter,
they will always see my pride.
You were so precious and your memory will always live on.
I'll never be sad that I had you, only that you're gone.

My tears are not a sign of my weakness;

I have nightmares and can't sleep.
The loss of you is a wound so deep.

My mind recorded the times we had.

I have nightmares and can't sleep.

Knowing there will be no more memories makes me sad.

I struggle for answers to what went wrong.
I'll miss you my whole life, however long.

My world has changed to black and gray.
My tears come frequently every day.

I don't think my heart will heal.
I still can't accept that this is real.

Keeping you close is not enough.
Happiness and smiling is so tough.

I don't know who I am; I only know I'm not me.
A mother who lost her child is what people see.

How can I go on without you here?
Finding out there is no heaven is my greatest fear.

I'm trusting my God and the promises he said.
I picture a beautiful reunion in my head.

One more day, just one more time to hold my child
and ease my mind.

I hope you knew how much you meant
and how much I loved the child God sent.

My heart, my soul will never be the same.
I will always cry when I hear your name.

I can't erase the day you left; it will always haunt me.
A life cut short, a scream in the night, something not meant to see.

The wound I have from losing you is a wound like no other,

Mother Longing To Hold Her Lost Child Again

I should have held you longer,
I should have held you tighter.
When you were a baby, I rocked you to sleep
and put you down because there was work to be done,

I should have held you longer,
I should have held you tighter.
When you were a baby, I rocked you to sleep
and put you down because there was work to be done,
but
I should have held you longer,
I should have held you tighter
because I can't hold you anymore.

Then you were a toddler;
you wanted to squirm and run,
so I put you down because you wanted to go have fun;
but
I should have held you longer,
I should have held you tighter
because I can't hold you anymore.

You grew and became a little boy,
and the times I could hold you became less and less
but still so dear.
I should have held you longer,
I should have held you tighter
because I can't hold you anymore.

You grew to be a young man.
I wanted to hold you near
but you just wanted to run clear.
But
I should have held you longer,
I should have held you tighter;
I had no idea I wasn't going to hold you anymore.

Now I hold you longer, tighter in my heart for all eternity,
wishing and wanting more...until I hold you again.

There are no words to say but, "I love you,"
For I've shed tears to not have heard you coo.

A mother's joy turned to grief in a moment so fast,

There are no words to say but, "I love you,"
For I've shed tears to not have heard you coo.

A mother's joy turned to grief in a moment so fast,
Hard to bear that your heartbeat had passed.

Instead of Heaven sent, you were sent to Heaven to be;
You're another guardian angel to watch over me.

I was blessed enough to hold you so dear.
I will try and fight all emotions of shedding a tear.

Baby boy, baby boy, just know,
You will always be loved; you'll see my tears flow.

I must admit I don't agree of what plan
God had for you and me.

I shall not be angry or fall apart;
Please just know I love you with all my heart.

I'll see you someday in the future not so near,
'Til then, baby boy, I'll love you from here.
