What Is Personification?

Personification is when you give human attributes (characteristics) to the object that is being personified. The objects are not human, and in many cases, they're not even living things.

Why Use Personification in Poetry?

Personification can be used to emphasize a point in your writing.
It can also be used to make a reader understand something you're trying to say.
Personification is a way to add more description to your poem by giving human characteristics to inanimate objects.

Examples of Personification in Poetry:

The breeze kissed my cheek.
When I got home from school my dog smiled at me.
The blanket wrapped its arms around me.
Rays of sunshine danced through the trees.
The chainsaw hummed a tune.

Winter would spend the night by sitting in the snow waiting for morning so children could come out to play.

This poem was written after I got clean from a 4-year heroin addiction. I based it off a letter addressed Dear Heroin that I wrote while incarcerated at 20-years-old for a drug offense. When I stumbled across the letter shortly after getting sober, it brought back so many negative and painful memories. However, it also made me feel so proud for the things I have accomplished and overcome...things that at one point seemed impossible. Recovery is possible, and it's up to you to grow your wings.

William Wordsworth was a well-known poet of the Romantic era, which began at the beginning of the 1800s. The focus during the Romantic era was on people's feelings and their connectedness to nature. The Industrial Revolution took place in Great Britain during the late 1700s and early 1800s. As cities grew, living conditions deteriorated for the poor and working class. Factories and mass production were beneficial for some but not everyone. This poem stands in contrast of new manufacturing processes of that time period by focusing on nature. The narrator in this poem, the brook, is personified. The brook shows persistence by continuing to flow, no matter what obstacles get in its way. The repeated lines, “For men may come and men may go, but I go on for ever,” showcase that. Famous poet Alfred Tennyson (1809-1892) was named Poet Laureate in Great Britain and Ireland.

I slowly unfurl to the wide World

Each day grows a little warmer

Summer is such a beautiful season of the year, all of the lush green and beautiful vibrant colors but most of all the perfumed scents of all the flowers, bushes and trees, the beautiful creatures come out to greet Summer as well, or should I say Summer brings the creatures out of hiding and to life. The butterflies are particularly one sure sign of Summer, along with fireflies that sparkle in the evenings, the smells of nectar of fruit trees. Summer touches nearly every place with her beauty!

As she tip-toes cross the sea,
she slips in so subtly.

Sharing her charms upon the earth,

She is fair and whimsical;

She lives her life in a childish way,

Temperamental she can be,
her thunderous voice and raging sea.

Though she calms down quite beautifully,
ribbons of rainbows she paints in the sky,
as she continues to pass on by.

She's as wild as the waves in the ocean,
as gentle as her sweet southern breeze,

she tends to all the nectar,
that flows within the trees.

She rests by where the willows weep,
and roams through fields of amber wheat.

She hides in forests dark and deep,
and climbs up to the mountain peak,

then soars to valleys down below,
there she watches orchards grow.

When evening comes, she wanders off into the starlit skies,
and gazes at the heavens with her sapphire eyes.

She dreams of dawns tomorrow,
when her ventures begin anew,
waking all the earth by sprinkling morning dew.

She is so very fickle,
she will not stay too long,

never wears her welcome out,
where she can not belong.

Soon there will come a day,
we will feel her presence gone,

she has crossed the vast horizon,
where she must triumph on.

She's known by many names throughout the land and sea,
but we just call her Summer; she lives eternally!

It also uses personification by giving human characteristics to the mirror.

Finding Joy

True Happiness is my definition of "Joy," which I can recognize, as I have experienced much previously. She slipped away in my early to mid-20s. I am now 55. I wrote this poem 17 years ago. It is mostly a rhyming, rhythmic poem, but I found that to be somewhat boring, so to create a little confusion and struggle in the reading, I disrupted the rhythmic feature of my poem in a couple places and found this to be symbolic of the confusion and struggle of my life without true happiness.

This time without you leaves unwanted scars.

I'm hurting inside and losing control.
I'm trying to hide it but it's taking a toll.

I'm saddened to the point of anger
that you betrayed me. Do you feel my pain? Do you feel any shame?

I wish you could feel the loss I've been delt!
That's when I realized that you have no feelings, but rather are a feeling to be felt!

Because I am losing hope that we will be reunited,
I have to make a choice but remain undecided.

Whether to succumb to this awful feeling of sadness,
or continue on faith, it seems like madness.

In the end I am not afraid, I'll continue, I must!
Because I also love others, I've gained their trust.

And though you left for whatever reason,
the others I love with help bring you back this next season.

To have taken you for granted was my biggest mistake.
Please forgive me, forgive me please for heaven's sake.

When you return to my arms, whenever this may be,
I'll never let you go or get away from me.

As for those who took your place when you are gone,
they are not invited; they use me like a pawn.

Making me feel so worthless on this Earth,
I long for your return, to signify my rebirth.

Northern Star

A few years ago I was on a self-destructive path, and the only gentleman in my life was my granddad, J.R.H. Graham. He was the best person you could meet. He was my granddad, my idol, my life. I heard a song called "Northern Star" by Hole, which gave me the idea to write this poem, because if you're lost you use the northern star to navigate to safety. And my granddad was that safe place.

The saffron-yellow sun grins on top of the beige sand,
and the aquamarine waves wash up onto the seashore.
The towering palm trees sway from side to side
as the gentle wind whistles through the beach.

The field of vivid flowers dance and smile underneath the lime colored grass,

and watching the surfers surf on their surfboards.
